In den späten 1970er- und frühen 1980er-Jahren setzt sich Schmalix, dessen Werke in dieser Phase von einer gesteigerten Farbkraft geprägt sind, mit den Bildgenres Stillleben, Landschaft, Akt und Porträt auseinander zunehmend expressiv und mit einer großen Affinität zu den Brücke-Malern.
