Nicht nur im Alltag und in der Werbung, sondern auch in Kinofilmen und in der Kunst gehören Inszenierungsformen mit der Zigarette größtenteils der Vergangenheit an. Daher widmet sich das Heft… der Zigarette - danach. Betrachtet wird das Rauchen in der visuellen Kultur. Der Rückblick auf die vielfältigen Konnotationen, die sich um das Rauchen als exotischen Genuss rankten, geht den kulturellen Verortungen des Tabaks nach: Kunstproduktion und Populärkultur imaginieren ein »wildes« Amerika und einen schwül-erotischen »Orient«; zugleich kann das Rauchen ein Zeichen von Emanzipation und Widerstand sein. Das Ephemere des Rauchens ist darüber hinaus eng mit Medien wie Fotografie und Film verbunden, die auf diese Weise Atmosphären schaffen und Diven erstehen lassen. Eine Poesie der Vergänglichkeit glimmt bei Paul Auster auf, wenn es heißt: »Zigaretten erinnern dich an deine Sterblichkeit. Jeder Zug ist ein flüchtiger Gedanke.« Alexandra Karentzos (Dr. phil.) ist Juniorprofessorin für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Trier. Sie ist Mitbegründerin des Centrums für Postcolonial und Gender Studies (Universität Trier). Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Kunst seit dem 19. Jahrhundert, Ironie und Postkolonialismus, Orientalismen, Gender Studies, Systemtheorie, Kunst und Tourismus sowie Antikenrezeptionen. Thomas Küpper (Dr. phil.) vertritt zurzeit eine Professur für Kulturwissenschaft an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Geschichte des Kitsch-Begriffs, eine Edition der Rundfunkarbeiten Walter Benjamins sowie die Diskursgeschichte des Alters. Jörg Petri ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Typografie und Buch an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Derzeit promoviert er dort zu Schriftklassifikation und -sortierung und lehrt zum Themenschwerpunkt Typografie in Print- und Onlinemedien. Ulrike Stoltz ist Professorin für Typografie und Buch an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig und freie Künstlerin.
