Sitter, artist and engraver all have entries in the Oxford DNB. No copy in the National Portrait Gallery. In good condition, lightly aged, on good paper with small embossment of castle. Dimensions of paper, 14.25 x 22.5cm. Dimensions of print, 12.5 x 17.75cm. Oval portrait, 10 cm wide and 13 cm high. Without date or place, but produced as the frontispiece to Stockdale's 1809 memoirs. A half-length portrait of Stockdale, his face turned to the left, with white cravat and powdered hair, loosely wrapped in a coat. From the papers of the agriculturist and colonial civil servant Sir Frank Stockdale (1883-1949), whose Oxford DNB entry does not mention any relation to Perceval Stockdale.

Lacks original wrappers, printing on page 137 a little pale, but all text legible, pale age-browning, 2 small neat edge repairs, otherwise a very good copy. One 3 page article outlines early Dutch discoveries and the landfalls of William Dampier before Captain Cook's survey of the east coast. Containing the stated FIRST PRINTING of the Addresses of the Mayor of Alexandria, VA. to George Washington on his leaving his home in Mount Vernon to become President of the United States and of Washington's address to the people in reply. Most probably the first printing in book form of either of the addresses. No earlier printings in book form seem to exist and the Library of Congress shows only the manuscript copy in their holdings. Also containing one of the earliest reports of the mutiny onboard the H.M.S. 'Bounty' and an extensive essay on William Harvey, as well as an essay by Mrs. Piozzi on the present King of Naples. Illustrated throughout. 8vo, contemporary tan calf over marbled paper covered boards, the spine with raised bands and a single red morocco label gilt tooled and lettered. 379, [5 index] pp. A very fresh and well preserved copy, the text still quite clean and crisp, only a hint of occasional spotting, a few old marks by an early reader, including the marking of one small section as "Not Fact". At 10:00am on the morning of April 16, 1789 General George Washington left Mount Vernon for the journey north to New York where he would be inaugurated as the first President of the new United States. His first stop was in Alexandria with his former aide-de-camp, Col. David Humphries and the Secretary of Congress, Charles Thomson. At noon he arrived in Alexandria where he took an early dinner at Wise's Tavern with citizens of the town. The address by the Mayor celebrating Washington's service to and love of country was followed by Washington's own address concerning his considerations for his having accepted the honour to be bestowed upon him in New York. Washington had wanted to retire from public life, but agreed to continue to serve the new nation upon the call of its citizenry. Both addresses are moving tributes, one to the man, one to the new nation and its people. Humble in origin, brilliant in effect they are. Though he was to live a very short life (he died at the age of 36) he was able to enjoy and make full use of the renewed flowering of music after the Restoration of the Monarchy. As the son of a musician at Court, a chorister at the Chapel Royal, and the holder of continuing royal appointments until his death, Purcell worked in Westminster for three different Kings over twenty-five years.

It featured handsome maps that have since become prized for their aesthetics and, as a result, increasingly scarce.

From the map's title, one wouldn't expect to find substantially all of New England on it.but it's there. The boundaries of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island are reasonably accurate, but "New Hampshire" applies to all of present-day New Hampshire and Vermont, and no attempt is made to show a boundary for an unnamed Maine. Included in the few coastal towns identified in Maine are Newcastle, Pentagoit and St. Saviours. The map bears a striking similarity -- though is somewhat larger than -- A Map of the British Plantations in North America that appeared in the London Magazine 36 years earlier.
