The uncommon first edition of the first volume of the Orchid Review, with issues I-X bound in one volume, anonymously edited by English botanist and orchidologist…Robert Allen Rolfe. In the publisher's original green cloth. Contains a colour frontispiece of a Cypripedium Charlesworthii orchid, as well as in-text illustrations. An illustrated monthly jorunal dedicated to orchidology within modern horticulture, including lists of newly discovered species of orchids, as well as notes on rarities, history, geography, and sketches. Despite its niche area of topic, the periodical grew in popularity over time and it continues to this day under the Royal Horticultural Society. At the time of publishing, Rolfe worked at the orchid herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew. In the publisher's original green cloth. Externally, smart, with minimal marks to boards. Slight rubbing to joints and edges, with bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Offsetting to free end papers, and a bookseller stamp to the front pastedown. Minor wear to front end paper hinge. Internally, firmly bound, with minor wear to hinge between pp.190-191. Small tide marks to bottom corners of leaves.
