FIRST EDITION. "A collection of papers written by friends and colleagues about one of the few great printers of the first half of this century. Two of the papers about him were written during Updike's lifetime; four were written shortly after his death in 1941; two were written specially for the present book. The long preliminary essay is the printer's own story of his career." "An Editor's Summary," p. 153. The contributors were Stanley Morison, Gregg Anderson, T.M. Kent & the Museum Press", the five addresses are by Daniel Berkeley Updike, Carl Purington Rollins, William Mills Ivins, Jr., Bruce Rogers and Henry Watson Kent. Designed by Rollins and printed at the Printing Office of the Yale University Press. Loosely inserted into this copy are two "RSVP" cards for the March 8, (1938) meeting of the Typophiles, each signed by Rollins and Kent, with their hand-written addresses, and the notice from the AIGA presenting the book. A fine, clean copy with the barest traces of edgewear, in the quite torn, original acetate DW, and in archival mylar. Signed by Author(s).
