V., Ebd. berieben u. etw. bestossen, etw. stockfleckig, Gbrsp. - Eschenburg, (1743 - 1820), studierte 1764-67 in Leipzig Theologie und war 1767-73 Hofmeister am Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig. 1772 wurde er mit der Übersetzung von Horazens Epistel an die Pisonen und an den Augustus nach der englichen Ausgabe von Richard Hurd bekannt. Als a.o. Prof. in Braunschweig (1773-77) hielt Eschenburg Vorlesungen über Theorie und Geschichte der Literatur sowie Logik. Er vervollständigte C. M. Wielands Shakespeare-Übersetzung (13 Bde., 1775-82; 12 Bde., (2)1798-1806) und machte damit den Stand der englischen Shakespeare-Forschung in Deutschland (Über W. Shakespeare, 1787) bekannt. Seit 1777 las er als o.Prof. Literatur und Philosophie. Aus der Lehre erwuchsen u.a. seine Werke Entwurf einer Theorie und Litteratur der schönen Wissenschaften (1783, (5)1836) und das vielfach übersetzte Handbuch der classischen Literatur und Alterthumskunde (1783, (8)1837). 1777-81 brachte er das "Brittische Museum für die Deutschen" heraus. Eschenburg, der 1782 zum Bibliothekar des Carolinums bestellt wurde, schrieb Gedichte, Epen und Dramen; er war Mitarbeiter an M. Claudius' "Wandsbecker Boten" und F. Nicolais "Allgemeiner deutscher Bibliothek" und mit zahlreichen führenden Persönlichkeiten befreundet, u.a. mit Lessing, dessen literarischen Nachlaß er teilweise herausgab. (DBE).
