Das Objekt Jason, die vielen gezeichneten "Amazonen", "Mänaden" un…d "Medusen" und die Aktion Iphigenie/Titus Andronicus sind nur einige Beispiele. Komplizierter - und spannender - wird es, wenn man den verschlüsselten Anspielungen nachgeht. Denn im Sinne des "erweiterten Kunstbegriffs" setzte Beuys seine genauen Kenntnisse der Antike völlig unarchäologisch und sehr persönlich ein. Die antike Welt mit ihren Mysterien, Orakeln und Initiationsriten spielte immer dort eine Rolle, wo es ihm um die Reaktivierung unverbrauchter Kräfte der Vergangenheit für die Gegenwart ging. Betrachtet man beispielsweise die frühe Aktion Wie man dem toten Hasen die Bilder erklärt unter dem Aspekt von Beuys' spezifischer Antikenrezeption, so kann sie als aktualisierte Version des Dionysos-Kultes, als rituelle Opferhandlung zum Zweck der Erneuerung und der mythischen Wiedergeburt gelesen werden.
