Los pueblos bereberes, que en tiempos remotos se extendían por todo el territorio norteafricano, desde el Mar Rojo hasta las Islas Canarias y desde las orillas del Mediterráneo hasta más allá de los límites meridionales del desierto del Sahara, se concentran en la actualidad especialmen…te en Argelia y, sobre todo, en Marruecos donde más de un tercio de su población es de origen bereber o, como ellos prefieren denominarla, amazigh (que significa «hombre libre»). Los bereberes de Marruecos muestran una gran diversidad, tanto tipológica como cultural, pero comparten incuestionables signos de identidad comunes: un idioma, el tamazight, muy difícil y prácticamente desconocido fuera de su ámbito, y una serie de arraigadas tradiciones populares, propias de la idiosincrasia de unas gentes, individualistas en grado sumo, que no admiten la existencia de ninguna organización que transgreda la dignidad de la persona, su incondicional libertad y la autorresponsabilidad. Entre esas tradiciones destaca la narración de cuentos populares que, aun hoy, cuando la irrupción de la radio y la televisión en su mundo está sustituyendo el contar y escuchar por la mera recepción pasiva, constituye uno de los pasatiempos favoritos de los bereberes marroquíes.
