Friedrich Voelcker (1872-1955), Chirurg und Urologe, entwickelte zahlreiche neue Operationsmethoden (u.a. "Voelckersche Spiralfedern") und gilt als einer der Begründer der modernen Urologie; 1933 trat er in die NSDAP ein, die er schon im folgenden Jahr wieder verließ, um einem jüdischen Hilfswerk einen namhaften Betrag zur Unterstützung Verfolgter zu spenden. - Wohl an seinen Kollegen Otto Nordmann in Berlin, Präsident der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Chirurgie, bei Übersendung des Manuskripts "meiner Discussionsbemerkung zu Vortrag 12" auf dem jüngsten Chirurgenkongress. Bereits 1905 machte uns Fritz Voelcker mit einem neuen Verfahren bekannt, die Hohlorgane des Harnsystems durch Füllung mit 2-5proz. Kollargollösung einer Röntgenuntersuchung zu unterziehen. Damit schuf er die Pyelographie, welche wir uns heute gar nicht mehr wegdenken können aus dem Schatz unserer diagnostischen Hilfsmittel. Ich war selbst Zeuge, als er gelegentlich der Versammlung deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte in Meran - 1905 - in aller Bescheidenheit über dieses Verfahren sprach und die ersten Pyleogramme vorführte. Vielleicht die wenigsten der damals Anwesenden waren sich der Bedeutung dieser Idee, die mit einem Kontrastmittel gefüllten Hohlorgane unter die Röntgenröhre zu bringen, bewußt und konnten ermessen, zu welch ungeahnten Erfolgen uns der weitere Ausbau dieser Methode zu bringen imstande war. Das Verfahren der Pyelographie mit Kollargol ist zwar später in Mißkredit geraten, weil Kollargol schwere Schädigungen des Nierenparenchyms hervorrief. Sie ist aber dann - 1919 - mit der Anwendung von Kontrastmitteln aus der Reihe der Halogene zu einem harmlosen und vollkommen ungefährlichen Untersuchungsbehelf geworden". "Das erste, was uns Fritz Voelcker (1872-1955) gab, war die Indigocarminprobe in Form der Chromocystoskopie - 1903. Man hatte zwar schon früher das Methylenblau angewandt, um aus dem Auftreten einer Blaufärbung des Harnes über die Ausscheidungsfähigkeit einer Niere Aufschluß zu gewinnen, dieses hat sich aber nicht bewährt, weil es im Körper manchmal eine Zersetzung und Entfärbung erfuhr. Voelcker war also auf der Suche nach einem neuen Farbstoff und fand ihn in dem Indigocarmin. Er war sich auch dessen bewußt, daß der ins Nierenbecken eingeführte Ureterkatheter die Ausscheidung aus den Nieren zu beeinflussen imstande sei, indem er manchmal eine Oligurie, manchmal eine Harnflut hervorrufen kann. Die Ausscheidung durch den U-Katheter gibt uns also ein klares Bild. Man muß eine Methode ausfindig machen, mit der es gelänge, ohne eingeführten U-Katheter die Ausscheidung zu beobachten. So kam er zu der Methode der Chromocystoskopie, mit welcher wir die Ausscheidung aus beiden Nieren im Cystoskop beobachten können."
