Quoting from the Preface: "Soviet biological and agricultural sciences have been strongly influenced since the 1930's by the doctrines and leadership of Trofim D. Lysenko who stressed the effect of environment, claimed the inheritance of many environmentally produced effects, codified Michurin's work, established the cult of Michurin worship, and advanced the theory of environmental transformation of species. I. V. Michurin (18551935), sometimes called the Luther Burbank of Russia, propounded the original doctrine adopted by Lysenko. Michurinism asserts that heredity is an aspect of metabolism, that hereditary variation is a result of the effects of changed environmental conditions, and that evolution is a result of the inheritance of such acquired characters over many generations. Philosophically both Lysenko's and Michurin's theories are in conformity with Marxist ideology, but the concepts are loosely-knit and subject to interpretation within broad limits. Lysenko's political-biological philosophy reached the peak of its influence in 1948--when it was officially recognized by the Soviet Government, and the orthodox genetics philosophy was eradicated--and continued to have a major effect in the field of biology and agriculture until 1953. Events since 1953 have gradually lessened Lysenko's influence and power. His removal as president of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1956 was heralded by some scientists and political analysts in the West as an indication of his complete downfall. Soviet biological and agricultural research has been in a turmoil, and the resultant contradictory evidence about the direction that such research would take has caused a fluctuation of opinion on Lysenko's personal position, the status of Michurin theories, and the degree to which Soviet biological and agricultural research is returning to sound fundamental principles. The report examines the present situation in Soviet biological and agricultural science and evaluates the trends in genetic research in the USSR.
