Entré dans ladministration des Postes, Télégraphes et Téléphones en 1899, docteur en droit en 1902, il fut bibliothécaire du min…istère des PTT jusquen 1935. Au cours de cette période, il enrichit les collections postales, rassemblant archives et documentation à partir desquelles il a développé une connaissance longtemps restée unique sur les Postes depuis leurs origines. Ses plus célèbres publications, comme son Histoire générale des Postes en sept volumes (19471955), ses trois précis de la collection « Que Sais-Je » aux Presses Universitaires de France, dont lHistoire du timbre-poste (1947) et les deux opus réédités ici, ou enfin son impressionnant volume sur Le cabinet noir (1950), furent saluées en leur temps, aussi bien par les historiens des Annales que par le grand public. Que-sais-je ?, no 200, 1948, in-12° broché (poche), 128 pages; papier légèr. bruni, sinon très bon état, La Poste est une société anonyme française principalement présente en tant qu'opérateur de services postaux (courrier, colis et express), banque, assurance, opérateur de téléphonie mobile, fournisseur de servic…es numériques et de solutions commerce, commerce en ligne (marketing, logistique) et collecte et vente de données. La Poste est détenue par la Caisse des dépôts et consignations et l'État français. La Poste et toutes ses filiales regroupées forment Le Groupe La Poste.Avant l'ouverture à la concurrence du secteur postal dans les années 2000, La Poste avait le monopole4 de l'acheminement et de la distribution du courrier en France, ce qui en fait l'opérateur courrier historique. Elle est par ailleurs le premier opérateur de courrier européen. Avec ses filiales, elle est le deuxième opérateur (en chiffre d'affaires) du colis-express en Europe. Elle est devenue au 1er janvier 2006 une banque de détail française, en transformant l'ancien réseau des centres de chèques postaux (CCP) gérant alors les comptes chèques émis par la Poste depuis la loi du 31 janvier 1918 portant création des CCP par le ministre des PTT de l'époque, M. Clémentel. La Banque postale compte environ 12 millions de clients en 2022, mais cette clientèle est une clientèle à petits revenus et la Banque postale assume un rôle d'ordre social ; en effet, la moitié des 4,35 millions de personnes bénéficiant d'aides sociales en 2020 reçoivent leurs allocations sur des comptes détenus au sein de la Banque postale. Les bureaux en propre de La Poste sont de moins en moins nombreux : moins de 7000 en décembre 2022 et les agences postales communales ou intercommunales, mises en place par certaines mairies en zone campagnarde et les relais-Poste, qui sont assurés par des commerçants sont au nombre de plus de 10 000 à la même date. La loi relative à la Poste en 1990 précise qu'au moins 90 % de la population nationale doit se trouver à une distance inférieure à cinq kilomètres, ou à moins de vingt minutes en voiture d'un point de contact de La Poste.
