Bis zu hundert Patienten aus aller Welt betreut er auf seinen drei Stationen und führt mit seinem Team bis zu fünf, sechs Operationen pro Tag durch - meist geht es um Schlaganfälle, Gehirntumore, Bypässe und Störungen an der Wirbelsäule.Diese Operationen sind körperlich anstrengend, oft zermürbend lang und hochkompliziert. Und alles spielt sich im Mikrobereich ab: Der Operateur sieht das, was er tut, nur durch ein Mikroskop in bis zu vierzigfacher Vergrößerung und näht mit Fäden, die nur wenige Hundertstel Millimeter Durchmesser haben. Auch wenn oft behauptet wird, es seien Wunder, die Prof. Vajkoczy und sein Team vollbringen - es ist vor allem das routinierte Zusammenspiel von jahrelang geschulten Spezialisten, modernster Technologie und der Bereitschaft, auch neue Wege zu gehen, um Heilung möglich zu machen. Doch all dies ist keine Garantie, dass das gewünschte Ziel erreicht wird. Geht etwas schief, ist die Gefahr groß, dass Patienten nur mit schweren Behinderungen oder im schlimmsten Fall gar nicht überleben.Es ist ein schmaler Grat, auf dem Prof. Vajkoczy und sein Team unterwegs sind, und zwar immer, an jedem Tag, bei jeder Operation, selbst wenn sie noch so beherrschbar scheint.
