Vallet en son pays !Vallet-Valais, une homophonie qui a déjà fait couler beaucoup d'encreLa Fondation Pierre Gianadda ne se borne pas à exposer les grands noms de la peinture ou de la sculpture ancienne et moderne. L'art suisse s'est illustré à maintes reprises dans s…on enceinte et c'est heureux.Au Genevois Edouard Vallet, qui fut aussi le chantre du Vieux-Pays, le Valais se devait de rendre un nouvel hommage, comme il le fera l'an prochain avec un autre Genevois d'exception, Albert Chavaz. Il y a trente ans, le Manoir de Martigny consacrait au peintre graveur une rétrospective; Sion l'avait largement accueilli au Musée de la Majorie en 1954 et c'est Maurice Zermatten qui signait le texte du catalogue.L'artiste s'exprimait indifféremment à travers la peinture, la gravure, le dessin ou le pastel. Le visiteur aura l'occasion d'approcher ces trois expressions, de même importance aux yeux de l'artiste. A propos de gravure, nous aurons le privilège de voir tirer périodiquement, à la Fondation même, certaines planches originales, sur la presse installée par Vallet à Vercorin, peu de temps après sa venue sur ce haut plateau en 1913. Millésime pour millésime, 2006 aura été «l'année Vallet» : la sortie du catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint chez Patrick Cramer à Genève et l'exposition de la Fondation. Avec un impératif toutefois, que le catalogue se rapportant à cette dernière fasse la différence avec l'ouvrage de référence cité.Parmi les 655 peintures recensées dans le catalogue raisonné, une centaine - parmi les plus belles - sont montrées à Martigny. Il faut y ajouter une galerie d'une trentaine de gravures, ainsi qu'une quarantaine de dessins et de pastels.En 1911, le natif du bout du lac avait épousé Marguerite Gilliard, fille du professeur Eugène Gilliard, elle-même également artiste peintre. Ils se sont tout de suite retrouvés sur le motif à Riod, près d'Hérémence, plus tard à Savièse et à Vercorin. La vie n'est pas toujours un long fleuve tranquille et Vallet devait perdre sa compagne, après sept ans de vie commune. Il a semblé tout naturel de l'associer à notre manifestation en lui faisant une petite place, l'occasion de révéler au public un autre talent. Si j'en ai un exemplaire ? Évidemment? An der Kunstgewerbeschule Genf besuchte…er für dreieinhalb Jahre eine Kurs für Holzschnitt bei Alfred Martin und war auch Schüler an der Genfer Kunstschule bei Barthélemy Menn. Er unternahm Studienreisen in die Dauphiné, nach Deutschland und Italien. 1899 hatte er seine erste Ausstellung.[1] Auf der Weltausstellung Paris 1900 erhielt er eine Erwähnung. 1909 war er in der Schweizer Sektion auf der Zehnten Internationalen Kunstausstellung in München vertreten.[1] Ab 1908 hielt er sich wiederholt in verschiedenen Gemeinden des Wallis, Savièse, Ayent, Hérémence, Vercorin und Sion, auf und lebte ab 1910 im Wallis. Vallet malte das ländliche Leben des Wallis und seine Bergwelt und gilt als ?Maler des Wallis? Vallet hat auch eine Anzahl Selbstporträts gemalt.[1]Er war seit 1912 mit der Malerin Marguerite Gilliard, einer Tochter des Malers Eugène Gilliard (1861?1921), verheiratet, die aber bereits 1918 starb, und seit 1920 mit Marie Jollien (1886?1951). Vallet ist auf dem Friedhof der Gemeinde Confignon beerdigt.Vallet ist in den meisten schweizerischen Museen vertreten. Eine Sammlung ist im Musée d?art du Valais in Sion eingerichtet. Die Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny präsentierte 2006 eine Ausstellung unter dem Titel L'art d'un regard. Aus seinen Beständen wurde 2013 im Kunstmuseum Solothurn ein Ausschnitt aus dem zeichnerischen Werk gezeigt. - Josef Halperin (2.12.1891-16.11.1963), heute vielleicht noch als Freund Glausers bekannt, der dessen Gourrama zur Publikation brachte, war ein geschätzter politisch und literarisch beschlagener Journalist. Ab 1914 wirkte er auf der Redaktion der Neuen Zürcher Zeitung und war 1920 bis 1932 als Deutschland und England-Korrespondent in Berlin und London stationiert. Halperin verbanden enge Freundschaften mit Carl Zuckmayer, Carlo Mierendorff und anderen politisch engagierten Autoren. Aus Protest gegen die unentschiedene Haltung der NZZ gegenüber dem aufkommenden Faschismus quittierte er 1932 seinen Posten in Berlin und kehrte in die Schweiz zurück. Dort war er maßgeblich am Aufbau der exilierten Büchergilde beteiligt. 1937/38 arbeitete er in der Redaktion der linken Wochenschrift ABC und war nach dem 2. Weltkrieg freiberuflich als Feuilletonist und Literaturkritiker tätig. Er trat als Übersetzer (Maupassants Gesamtwerk in 6 Bänden) und Herausgeber ("Als das Jahrhundert noch jung war") in Erscheinung und verfolgte auch eigene literarische Ambitionen, von denen mehrere abgeschlossene Romanmanuskripte im Nachlass zeugen.
