Cloth. Condizione: Very good. First edition of the Valley Of The Upper Wabash, Indiana, by Henry William Ellsworth, a scarce emigrant guide to the midwestern United States from 1838. (illustratore). First Edition. Twelvemo, xii, 175pp, [1]. Contemporary pebbled cloth, title stamped in gilt over red morocco label. Spine rebacked, text block resown. Notable drawing and writing on endpapers, including the previous owner's name in ink. Light foxing to endpapers, occasional foxing and toning throughout. Includes a large fold-out map by S. Augustus Mitchell, published in 1838, affixed opposite the title page. The map has tissue repairs along hinges, toning where tape repairs were removed, a solid example. This work is complete with the map, and three lithographed plates showing plans for a dwelling, an improved reaping machine, and Hussey's Reaping Machine. The final plate has an archival repair to a closed tear, light toning, some loss along lower right corner. (Sabin 22346) (Howes E128) (Eberstadt 11, 198) A very good example of this scarce work. "One of the great prairie immigration pamphlets, very informative from the point of view of the beginning of agriculture on the prairies." (Streeter III, 1417).
