Ciascuna delle 4 edizioni è quella citata come più antica nel repertorio della Wellcome Historical Medical Library. I primi due trattati, di un medico olandese, riguardano i calcoli: il primo è una dissertazione sui calcoli dei reni e della vescica, il secondo prende spunto dagli Aforismi di Ippocrate. Il terzo trattato, opera di un medico britannico, è un manuale generale di medicina. Il quattro trattato, in due parti, spetta a un filosofo e medico padovano, docente presso l`Università della sua città, e riguarda l`apparato genitale di entrambi i sessi, con loro \"stuctura, actiones et usus\"; in appendice a tale trattato sono pubblicate due dissertazioni: Gregori Nymanni dissertatio de vita foetus in utero e Adriani Spigelii Bruxellensis epistola de incerto tempore partus. Some dampstaining & a little foxing but a very good copy. Amsterdam: Schipper, 1672. First issued in 1651, Beverwyck's works were re-issued periodically to about 1680. He was one of the most distinguished Dutch physicians, a correspondent of Descartes and Harvey, who was one of the first to promote Harvey's ideas on the circulation, both in his own work and through the publication of letters to him from Descartes, signalling the first support for Harvey from a major Continental figure. Harvey's illustrations of the circulation appear in the Wercken, as do figures from Beverwyck's relative Vesalius, and Beverwyck's famous response to Montaigne's attack on the medical profession. The first part of the Wercken, Der schat der gesontheyt, is included in Praz, Studies of 17th century imagery (1964) 270 for its beautiful, large text illustrations (wine, tobacco, exotic peoples). First edition of this famous work in urology, one of the earliest medical books to accept William Harvey's account of the circulation of the blood. Beverwyck was a Dutch physician and a relative of Vesalius. He sent a copy of this work to Harvey with a letter praising him for his work on circulation, saying "As everyone here wonderingly admires this doctrine, so I too embrace it both both arms in the little book which I send 'On the calculus of the kidneys and the bladder'". Harvey replied at length, praising the work with the punning passage: "Pleasing me, learned and elegant, and truly original, your De calculo renum et vesicae, in which you have laid a firm and solid foundation for your name and fame; go on to build further day by day, and erect a splendid monument of your genius. I will, not unwillingly, add my stone." He went on to provide a detailed and approving critique of Beverwyk's work on the operation of the kidneys. 12mo (122 × 70 mm.), pp. [xvi], 305, [15]. Johan (Jan) van Beverwijck (Latin: Beverovicius; 1594/95-1647) was a city physician of Dordrecht, a relative of Vesalius, who studied medicine in Leiden and took his doctorate in Padua. He became widely known through his Dutch language popular medical works (Medicinae encomium / Lof der medicine, Heel konste), in which he made contemporary medical knowledge accessible to lay readers and introduced Harvey's doctrine of the circulation of the blood to Continental audiences. "Idea medicinæ veterum" shows him as a convinced humanist physician who, despite his openness to new physiology, continued to value the moral and intellectual resources of antiquity for medical practice. For Beverwijck's contemporaries, the volume served as an erudite reservoir of quotations, useful for academic disputations, lectures, and Latin correspondence, but also as a way to "ennoble" medical practice through constant reference to antiquity. In the history of medical humanism, "Idea medicinæ veterum" is one of the more systematic early modern attempts to map the "medical knowledge outside medical books"-that is, to reconstruct ancient medicine from the broader literary canon rather than only from Hippocrates and Galen.…
