Small quarto. Handsomely bound in contemporary full tan calf, the boards double-ruled in gilt and with central decorative vignette in gilt to each board; the spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt, with decorative gilt devices to the compartments and titles in gilt. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Page edges gilt. Original printed wrappers bound in. Short introductory essay by Max Rooses, followed by 46 finely engraved plates by Crispin van de Passe after Maerten de Vos, each with a tissue-guard and preceding caption leaf in Dutch and French. Unobtrusive embossed stamp to the rear endpaper for Neatham Mill Library. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a few minor blemishes and a touch of rubbing to the joints. The contents with a little offsetting from the plates to the facing blank verso of the caption leaf are otherwise wonderfully clean and crisp throughout - the engravings remaining bold and sharp. A beautifully fine and crisp suite of engravings depicting the life and the Passion of Christ by the Dutch old master engraver and publisher Crispin van de Passe (c.1564-1637) after the Flemish painter Maerten de Vos (1532-1603), originally executed in 1588 for a Book of Hours to be published by van de Passe's Plantin Press, but which never came to fruition. The engraved copperplates remained unused at the Plantin Press, then subsequently the Plantin-Moretus Musuem, for more than 300 years before they were finally put to use for the first time in the present publication - as is reflected by the remarkable strength and depth of the impressions. All printed on the recto side only, on strong paper. (complete). Bound in a brown full morocco binding , without decoration (jansenist), all edges gilt. raised spine with gilt title, Marbled endpapers, pastedown within an intricate floral and straight fillet pattern. Some margins have been carefully restored (max. restored width only a few millimeter). Binding signed Chambolle-Duru. Very fine copy. Crispin van de Passe produced his series of engravings for an edition of 1602. This 1607 edition appeared with the addition of the bi-lingual epigrams (Latin & German). Engraved sheet with portrait and map, the border 135 by 95mm. [Cologne, The very rare Crispin van de Passe portrait of Drake, a close copy of the very important Hondius portrait which, in its first state, is found in only two examples (Royal Geographical Society, and Huntington Library).   Kraus wrote "The portrait of Drake is of especial interest: it . depicts him in bust, with a shield, and with a two-hemisphere terrestrial map displaying the track of his circumnavigation" - Kraus. The shield bears an image of The Golden Hind, the vessel in which Drake circumnavigated the globe in 1577-1580. This portrait was engraved for Effigies Regum ac Principum, eorum scilicet quorum vis ac potentia in re nautica seu marina prae caeteris spectabilis est . An album of engravings from the most famous natural history artists of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, collected and bound for an English patron Oblong quarto (260 by 170mm), 176 engraved plates, numbered in an early hand 1-46, 48-54, 57-69, 80-189, including 8 title-pages, all with fine contemporary hand-colour in full, occasionally heightened in silver, two plates torn with slight loss to image and with early repairs, six plates with slight worming to margins, and three plates trimmed to neatline and laid down on old paper, front free endpaper with later ownership inscription; mid-seventeenth century English red morocco, elaborately gilt, silver clasps and catches. A magnificent album of natural history engravings, collected and bound for an English patron, containing two complete suites of plates: Hoefnagel's 'Diversæ insectarum volatilium'; and Woutneel's 'Cognoscite lilia agri quomodo crescent', often bound as the fifth part, 'Altera Pars', to the Crispin de Passes' 'Hortus Floridus' - the "most ambitions, if not the first, early effort to employ Continental resources to produce a set of [botanical] engravings designed for the English market" (Gerard); and nine near complete, or partial suites, including an early issue of tulip plates from the 'Hortus Floridus'. All plates have been numbered consecutively in manuscript at the time of binding to a rudimentary scientific rubric: insects first, then aquatic animals, quadrupeds, birds, and botanicals last, but not least. As a result, some plates are bound with like subject rather than with their original publications. The album represents the work of some of the most famous natural history artists of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The majority are published by Claes Jansz Visscher (1587-1652), the most important publisher of prints and maps in Amsterdam of his day. Recorded as an engraver in Amsterdam as early as 1608, he built a distinctive inventory of prints after the designs of Flemish artists, which proved extremely popular and formed the basis ofVisscher'searly success as a publisher.
