The view is by Pierre van der Aa (1659-1733), a prolific publisher particularly during the first part of the eighteenth century. By 1682 he was a bookseller and proprietor of an auction house. Aggiungi al carrelloNo binding. 225 x 295 mm., early outline colour, in good condition. This attractive detailed map of the British Isles was originally published by Pierre van der Aa in 'Le Nouveau Theatre du Monde', 1713. It is a reduction of Guillaume De L'Isle's map of 1702. The unusual title cartouche features Neptune being pulled by horses in front of a view of London. This is the rare second state of the map published by Cornelis Mortier and Johannes Covens; a partnership founded in 1721. They were prolific publishers who likely acquired these plates around the time of Van der Aa' death in 1733. The first issue of the 'Nouvel Atlas', according to Koeman, bore no alterations to the plates. In the second, Covens and Mortier added their imprint and the number 8 outside the margin lower right.Pierre van der Aa (1659-1733) was born in Leiden, the son of a stone cutter or sculptor. By the time he was nine years old he was already apprenticed to a bookseller. By 1682 he was the owner of a bookshop and auction. His output is so large that Koeman was sure that there were works yet to be identified. His printed catalogue of 1729 alludes to the fact that works could be made to order. As with many of his published books, the source of the plates contained within is various. Amongst these publications is arguably the biggest atlas ever published, the 66 volume 'La Galerie Agreable du Monde'. Provenance: Gebr. Haas 2004; private English collection. Condizione: Fair. 235 x 400 mm. the whole, with recent wash colour, a separate map plate measuring 145 x 200 mm. printed within decorative border, with some foxing to the margins, otherwise in good condition. This plate was originally from the 1628 edition of the 'Atlas Minor' by Johannes Janssonius (Jansson, 1588-1664). This map consists of four islands in the British Isles. It is ultimately derived from the folio map of the same first published by Gerard Mercator in 1595.There were several editions of the 'Atlas Minor' through to 1651. After his death in 1664 the fate of the copperplates is unknown. In the early 1700s they passed into the hands of Pierre van der Aa. They were included in the extremely rare 'L'Atlas Soulagà ' published in Leiden, c.1710. In nine parts, the fourth relates to the British Isles. For this issue the plate was revised, most noticeably with some names anglicised such as the seas. The only title alteration was the removal of 'ol: Vectis' from the Isle of Wight. It was also included in the momentous 66 volume 'La Galerie Agreable du Monde', 1729. The most desirable issues by van der Aa are those where a separate outer ornate frame are printed, as here.Pierre van der Aa (1659-1733) was born in Leiden, the son of a stone cutter or sculptor. Aggiungi al carrelloCopper engraving, published in 1714 in Leiden by Pieter van der Aa Top left, title in a cartouche with the arms of the kingdom, illustrated with a hunting scene. A nice hand coloured map. Trimmed closely to the edge. A touch of foxing / marking, but not bad. Colours have faded a little. The map is page 19 of the Atlas Le nouveau théâtre du monde ou la géographie royale, published 1713. 230 x 300 mm (9 x 11¾ inches). Pierre van der Aa, together with various Dutch, French, and German cartographers, is recognized for having reproduced maps of Ireland based upon William Petty's Hiberniae Delineatio of 1685, acknowledged as the first comprehensive atlas of Ireland. Petty's original map had been engraved in Amsterdam in 1673 (Tooley, p.93). This map depicts not only Ireland but also portions of England, Wales, and Scotland, along with the islands of Man and Anglesey. Van der Aa (16591733) was a distinguished Dutch publisher of maps and atlases who engaged leading engravers of his time to produce works of superior technical execution and aesthetic refinement.
