Soft cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. English text.; Paperback.; 25 x 29 cm.; 1.8 kg.; 328 pages with black and white and colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The exterior shows edge wear, wear marks, scuffs and scratches. Small bumps at the bottom and top of the spine. Int…erior with an ex-library stamp on the first two pages. Remaining interior with minor signs of wear.; A selection of the prints in this catalogue was exhibited in the Van Gogh Museum from 7 June until 22 September 1991 as part of the exhibition Japan: Van Gogh's Utopia.; "The collection of 474 Japanese prints in the Van Gogh Museum is for the most part owned by the Vincent van Gogh Foundation and hails from the joint estate of Vincent and Theo Van Gogh. Theo's son, Ir Dr Vincent Willem van Gogh (1890-1978), later expanded the collection somewhat. It is no longer possible to find out exactly which prints were added by him to the original group. In 1986 the museum's collection was enlarged with a gift of 35 prints by the Tokyo Shimbun in Japan, whereby Hiroshige's Tokaido series of 1855, of which 20 prints were already in the museum's possession, could be completed. This catalogue is a completely revised and extended edition of the 1978 catalogue Japanese Prints collected by Vincent van Gogh. Its publication will be accompanied by a summer presentation of Japanese prints and of paintings and drawings by Vincent van Gogh in- spired by Japanese art under the title Japan: Van Gogh's Utopia.Charlotte van Rappard-Boon and Keiko van Bremen-Ito adapted the original text of the catalogue according to the latest available information and, advised by Yoriko Yoshida, Machiko Fukae, Tsuneo Kodaira, Lotje van der Peet and Tom Harper, they added a myriad of new facts and details." excerpt from the preface Ronald de Leeuw.

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text.; Paperback.; 0.7 kg.; 25.5 x 22 cm.; 160 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The exterior shows edge wear and scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior with minor signs of wear. "I…n December 1989 the Schilling collection of nineteenth-century Japanese photography was acquired by the Dutch bookstore Ukiyo-e Books in Leiden from Lempertz Auction house in Cologne, Germany. When I initially viewed these works with the owners, we were all struck by their exceptional quality, both in the pristine condition and in the diverse imagery. Almost immediately the idea of a publication was born. During my survey of the existing literature in Western language sources dealing with Japanese tourist photography of the late nineteenth century, I was convinced of the need to devote time on what appeared to be a relatively undocumented area. Earlier writers had concentrated only on well-known Western photographers, Felice Beato and Baron von Stillfried, who worked in Japan a number of years. Little attention was paid to the indigenous industry of tourist photography which flourished from c. 1880. It has only been in the last decade that serious interest in the field increased among Japanese scholars. In this book it has been my aim to integrate both Japanese and Western sources and to address some of the relevant questions which have been left unanswered in Western literature. My own training as an anthropologist explains the emphasis of the text on the socio-cultural meaning of the Schilling photographs, although their artistic and historic value no doubt warrants further in depth treatment by art historians and historians alike. Following a brief introduction concerning the provenance of the Schilling collection, I have attempted to outline the cultural and historical setting within which Japanese photography developed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Then I focus upon photography as a technique and as a profession; a description of the early days of photography in Japan serves as an introduction to various aspects of Japanese souvenir photography, the latter being particularly germane to the collection presented in this publication." excerpt from the foreword by Margarita Winkel Leiden, June 1991.

The dust jacket shows edge wear, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. Tear at the top left si…de of the front cover and also on the top of the spine. Interior with minor signs of wear.; "Dutch people may find the title of this book rather thought-provoking. They will instantly associate the first part of the title, 'Imitation and Inspiration', with the general preconception that Japanese economy and culture evolved during these last decades as a direct result of a successful imitation of Western models. However, from the subtitle it appears that the book is about Western, and in this case, Dutch imitation of and inspiration by Japanese art. This book is not only a token of respect for the cultural and historical links between Japan and Holland, but, at the same time, proof that it is only through continuous contact with each other's cultures that mutual preconceptions based on stereotypes can be avoided. In Europe and North America, Japanese influences on Western art have gradually begun to attract a great deal of popular interest. In general, this interest has mainly focused on Japonism, which made its appearance in various Western art forms after the Japanese ports had been opened to foreign trade in 1854. However the unique position that was occupied by the Dutch in Japan from 1609 onwards, at first as representatives of the Republic of the United Provinces and, after 1813, as representatives of The Kingdom of the Netherlands, justifies a more elaborate treatment of the subject. Many art experts and connoisseurs have indeed devoted their attention to this period. However, they often have concentrated on the influence exerted on Japanese art and culture by the Dutch trading post on Deshima. From the pages that follow it will appear that, conversely, Dutch and other Western arts and crafts were strongly influenced by the Japanese. As early as the beginning of the seventeenth century, contacts between the Republic and Japan led to a great interest in Japanese art and the imitation of that art in the Netherlands. As becomes apparent from the various contributions to this volume, this interest has continued to the present day." foreword by Stefan van Raay.
