Red Cloth. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Minor edge and corner wear, lightly scuffed and scratched, corners are gently bumped and rubbed, lightly shelf worn, former owner's inscription in ink on the ffep, overall a very clean used first edition! Inscription is dated 1900 so I am assuming this copy is from around the turn of the 20th century. 651 unmarked and uncreased historical pages! "History has been revolutionized, within a hundred years in Germany, within sixty years in France, and that by the study of their literatures. It was perceived that a work of literature is not a mere play of imagination, a solitary caprice of a heated brain, but a transcript of contemporary manners, a type of a certain kind of mind. It was concluded that one might retrace, from the monuments of literature, the style of man's feelings and thoughts for centuries back. The attempt was made, and it succeeded." ---- from the Introduction Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover.

Aggiungi al carrelloLeather. Condizione: Good Only. None (illustratore). A classic of literary criticism by this influential French proponent of naturalism, who is remembered for his three-pronged approach of considering "race, millieu, and moment." Taine was hugely influential in the direction French literature into the 20th century. The 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica asserted that "the tone which pervades the works of Zola, Bourget and Maupassant can be immediately attributed to the influence we call Taine's". This work enjoyed a strongly favourable reception among English critics. The Westminster Review wrote, "[Taine] has produced the most elaborate an valuable history that now exists of the copious and splendid literature of England." Even the Fortnightly Review, which sought to criticise the work, acknowledged that "whatever his faults, it is impossible not to be grateful to him." A significant work in the development of 20th century English literary criticism, all the more interesting for being written by this brilliant Frenchman. In half calf. Externally, smart with only light rubbing, however there is damage with some small loss to the heads of both spines. The front joint of volume I has split, however the board is still attached via the hinge. The spine is still attached to the backstrip by the head. Internally, firmly bound. The first and last few pages in each volume are spotted, otherwise generally clean. Good Only. book.
