Architekturstudiums an der Cooper Union in Manhattan, anschließend am Black Mountain College in North Carolina, dort belegte er 1949 zwei…Semester Fotografiekurse bei Hazel Larsen Archer. In den 1950er Jahren drehte er unabhängige Kunstfilme, während er Animationstechniken lernte und Kulissen und Bühnenbilder für Winky Dink and You malte. In den 1960er Jahren begann VanDerBeek mit Claes Oldenburg und Jim Dine sowie Vertretern des modernen Tanzes und des Expanded Cinema wie Merce Cunningham und Elaine Summers zusammenzuarbeiten. Gleichzeitig entwarf er Shows mit mehreren Projektoren in seinem Movie Drome Theater in Stony Point, New York. Sein Wunsch nach dem Utopischen führte ihn zur Zusammenarbeit mit Ken Knowlton an den Bell Labs, wo Dutzende von computeranimierten Filmen und holographischen Experimenten entstanden.
