The 1880s featured Omar Khayyam clubs, as people gravitated towards the poem's lush hedonism. Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) capitalized on Khayyam's cult following in his illustrated version of the poem. Originally published in folio format in 1884, this 1886 first quarto edition is made up of full page black and white illustrated text leaves. First Vedder edition, the first fully illustrated edition of the Rubáiyát, "quite unlike any other book issued from an American publishing house. It opened an era in the history of American art publishing" (quoted in Soria, p. 188). This copy is custom-bound by the Roycrofters in a striking pigskin binding and presented in a monumental presentation box. Elihu Vedder (1836-1923), though American-born, spent much of his adult life in Europe. When commissioned by Houghton Mifflin to illustrate the Rubáiyát, he entered into the project single-mindedly and ambitiously, complaining to his publishers "how is it in God's name that such fine things can be done in England and France and not in America?" (quoted in Soria, p. 184). In the event, the 1884 edition was a masterpiece. It made Vedder's name internationally, and his illustrations have subsequently been recognized as "some of the earliest examples of Art Nouveau in America" (Grove Art Online). In the early years of the 20th century, this volume passed through the hands of the Roycroft community, who put their bookbinding, metal-, and wood-working skills to reimagining this copy on behalf of Helen Ruth Morrow (1889-1964). The Roycrofters, in East Aurora, New York, were established by Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) as a response to the work of William Morris, which Hubbard had admired when visiting the Kelmscott Press. It inaugurated the American arm of the arts and crafts movement and attracted the patronage of Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, and Queen Victoria. Potter 201. Folio (388 x 310 mm). Early 20th-century pigskin, spine lettered in blind with raised bands, geometric design blind-stamped to spine, boards, and turn-ins, verso of boards with bevelled edges, reversed calf doublures, front pastedown with pigskin label reading "specially bound by the Roycrofters for Miss Helen Ruth Morrow", second set of grey endpapers, edges orange, orange bookmarker. Housed in a custom wooden box with metal hinges and clasp lined in reverse calf, with two loose blue pull ties. Signed limited edition, number 47 of 100 copies signed by the illustrator, printed on japon, and bound in full morocco; an unsigned trade issue bound in cloth was also released. Vedder's Rubáiyát is widely esteemed as the finest American edition of the poem ever to be published. "When Houghton Mifflin commissioned Elihu Vedder to illustrate The Rubáiyát, they employed an artist with a rich sense of classical interpretation. Vedder spent 11 months in Rome fulfilling the commission, producing monochrome illustrations in a Greco-Roman style, which caused the London journal Athenaeum to describe Vedder as the latest follower of Michelangelo. Nonetheless, the Grove Art Online encyclopaedia comments on the Vedder drawings as 'some of the earliest examples of Art Nouveau in America'. Houghton Mifflin reissued the Vedder Rubáiyát in different formats in 1886. New editions and reprints continued into the 1920s" (Martin & Mason, The Art of Omar Khayyam: Illustrating Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat, 2007). With an excellent provenance: from the library of the pioneering Rubáiyát collector Herman M. Schroeter of Los Angeles, with his "Omariana" bookplate facing the limitation page. Schroeter began a bibliography of the Rubáiyát but abandoned his intention to publish in 1914 when Ambrose George Potter, who had corresponded with him for six years, took up the project. Potter notes in his foreword that Schroeter "generously presented me with the manuscript material he had prepared". Potter's bibliography remains the standard work, still universally consulted by collectors of the Rubáiyát. Potter 201. Folio.
