Softcover. Condizione: vg to fine. Facsimile edition. 800/1000. Quarto. Unpaginated. 6pp (text), 80pp (photographs), (2)pp. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over blind wrappers, with blue lettering on cover and spine, housed in gray cloth clamshell box with black lettering on paper label laid to debossed square on cover; black lettered paper label on spine. Facsimile reproduction of "Paris" by Moshé Raviv-Worobeichic (Moï Ver) from copy No. 1 of the first edition published in 1931 by Editions Jeanne Walther. Introduction by Futurist Fernand Léger. Facsimile edition of "this revolutionary work which introduced Moï Ver to the world is a striking tour de force of photomontage utilizing Bauhaus style photography and design. Its 80 pages of avant-garde photomontages evoke a modern form of Paris through his visualizations. The method in which Moï Ver chose to present his material, in its kaleidoscopic layering and frenzied repetitiveness, emphasizes an experimental approach to picture-construction. In this sense, Paris remains the author's quintessential avant-garde book object. The jacket's front cover superimposes factory smokestacks upon a classic stone colonnade, thus setting up familiar juxtapositions: art and industry, antique and modern, beauty and banality. Moï Ver's Paris is a metropolis pulsating with fast-paced daily life, moving almost out of control. Cobblestone streets, bustling crowds, facades, railway tracks, bridges, the glittering river, and countless monuments shift and shatter here" (Andrew Roth: "The Book of 101 Books," pp. 70-71). It is interesting to note that Karl Lagerfeld's facsimile edition of this work features the photographs in a different order, which seems to indicate that the legendary designer's copy was at some point disbound, with pages mixed up, and rebound without following the original pagination. Provenance: the legacy of French painter Charles Marcel Jean Picart Le Doux (1902-1982). Text in French.

One of the most important (and rarest) photobooks in the history of the medium, Moï Ver's Paris, first published in 1931 by Éditions Jeanne Walter, was avant-garde in its layered photos of the city's streets and industry, not to mention its graphic layout. Yet tragedy soon struck: 95% of production was destroyed by a flood of the Seine with only around 40 books surviving, of which the publisher's archival copy found its way into Karl Lagerfeld's private collection. This exceptional copy was scanned for the painstaking 2004 facsimile re-print of Paris, published by Edition 7L and produced by Steidl in a limited print-run of 1,000 copies. Gerhard Steidl's challenge was to recreate the gravure printing of the original book in offset technology, a process for which he registered a patent and experimented for over three years. To ensure the longevity of printing and binding quality, Steidl produced at the time a "pilot series" of books, identical to the long since sold-out run of 1,000 copies. This series of just over 400 copies?forgotten in our warehouse and recently rediscovered?are the last copies of a facsimile claimed by the New York Times to be so close to the original, that future generations would not be able to differentiate them. This copy is number 170/1000.

Condizione sovraccoperta: dj. First Edition. First Edition. Quarto. Number 682 of 1000 press-numbered copies. Simultaneously one of the greatest avant-garde photobooks and one of the most insightful Parisian paeans; Parr & Badger remark on the absolute gulf that stands between the dynamism of Moï Ver's Paris?with its complex photomontage techniques and kinetic layout?and the conservative stillness of Atget, whose monograph on the city was published, remarkably, just one year prior. Introduced with text from Fernand Léger. (Roth 70-71; Parr / Badger, v1, 128-129). Trace foxing to the top edge of textblock, else a beautiful, close to fine copy. In plain wrappers, enclosed by the distinctive French-fold jacket that boasts the masterful superimposition of smokestacks over stone colonnade; also close to fine. Housed in custom cloth slipcase with a matching lettered chemise. A memorable copy of this consensus high-spot.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good to very good+ condition. First German edition. Octavo. 7 (1)pp., 64 plates, 6 (1)pp. Orange quarter cloth over original b/w photo-sillustrated paper boards, protected in original glassine. Pre- W.W.II photo essay on the so-called Jewish Ghetto of Vilna and its residents. Published as number 27 in the famous series of German photo books, Schaubücher. This version is printed with text in German and Hebrew, with an introduction by S. Chneour. Lithuanian photographer Moshe Raviv-Vorobeichic studied at the Bauhaus in the 1920s and at the Ecole de Photo Cine in Paris. Following his studies, he returned home and created this scarce prewar document. Early montage and double exposure techniques exemplified in his work. Photographic study of Jewish Vilna prior to the Holocaust. Photographic reproductions, some photo-montages of Jews at play, many buildings, walkways, stairs, and portraits. Captions in German and Hebrew. Martin Parr: The Photobook Vol. 1, page 130. Text in German and Hebrew. Front cover with small bump at lower edge, near foredge. Text pages with some foxing. Binding in overall good, interior in good, photos in very good+ condition. [WITH] A collection of 14 original b/w photographs from the same Vilna Ghetto Project by Moï Ver, originally taken circa 1928. 12 of the photographs are smaller sized, measuring on average, approximately 4 1/2 x 3", with some variation in the cut dimensions. There are also 2 larger images, one measuring 5 1/4 x 7 1/2" showing the roof of the Great Synagogue of Vilna and the largest showing the gate of the synagogue's courtyard, measuring 8 1/4x 11 1/2". Surprisingly none of these evocative and striking images of the Vilna Ghetto and its inhabitants were used ultimately used in the book, but many are quite similar to the images which did get used. These photographs are likely later prints made from the original negatives, and all contain the ink stamp of the acclaimed phtographer's studio in Tel Aviv, on the verso. The versos of the two larger images also include notes in pen in German, with one dated to 1928.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION, illustrated with 65 images of the Jewish ghetto in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. With preface by poet Zalman Chneour in Hebrew and German. "In the same year that his Paris was published, Moà Ver - under his real name of Moshà Vorobeichic- produced Ein Ghetto im Osten (A Ghetto in the East). The book, with both Hebrew and German text, featured his photographic record of the Jewish ghetto in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, documenting a way of life that would soon disappear under terrible circumstances. Even more so than Paris, Ein Ghetto im Osten was ostensibly a documentary book, but as he had done in his view of the French city, Moà Ver could not resist pushing the envelope of the documentary form. Once again, he used a variety of New Vision strategies, the most obvious being to take many images from upstairs windows looking on to the narrow streets of Vilnius's old Jewish quarter. This creates odd angles and a dynamic mise en scà ne for his pictures of people going about their everyday business on the street. But Moà Ver didn't stop there. He also introduced cinematic cutting and montaging techniques to heighten the interest. A poignancy has been added [to Ein Ghetto im Osten] in hindsight: it was made at the beginning of a desperately traumatic time for European Jewry" (Parr/Badger, The Photobook). Zurich and Leipzig: Orell Fussli, 1931. Small octavo, publisher's photo-illustrated boards. Very minor rubbing, some foxing to the early and end leaves, some light soiling, generally an excellent copy.

Gerhard Steidl`s challenge was to recreate the gravure printing of the original book in offset technology, a process for which he registered a patent and experimented for over three years. To ensure the longevity of printing and binding quality, Steidl produced at the time a `pilot series` of books, identical to the long since sold-out run of 1,000 copies. This series of just over 400 copies - forgotten in our warehouse and recently rediscovered - are the last copies of a facsimile claimed by the New York Times to be so close to the original, that future generations would not be able to differentiate them." Edition 7L, 2002 Steidl 2002. 22,3 x 29,3 cm. 80 Seiten. Mit 80 Schwarzweiß-Tafeln. In Original Leinenkassette. Moï Ver (Moshé Raviv-Vorobeichic) was born in 1904 in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he also studied painting. In 1927, visited the Bauhaus in Dessau to take courses with Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Joseph Albers, before he left for Paris to study at the Ecole de Photo Ciné. After several unrealised projects for photographic books, necessity led him to begin a career as a reporter. He immigrated to Palestine in 1934, and from 1950 he devoted himself to painting. He died in 1995.***************Ann und Jürgen Wilde, Zülpich / Köln. 2004. Deutsche Erstausgabe. Neu, ungelesen, verlagsfrisch.
