"Prosper Mérimée schuf 1847 mit der Figu…r der spanischen "tanzenden Zigeunerin" Carmen - stark, impulsiv, eigensinnig, exotisch - eine Frau, an der sich Schicksale entzünden, und einen Charakter, der die Künste inspirierte. Georges Bizet schrieb auf Basis der Novelle seine gleichnamige weltberühmte Oper. Aber auch in den Werken von Edouard Manet, Gustave Courbet oder Nadar hinterließ sie ihre Spuren, Männer von Nietzsche bis Adorno konnten sich ihrem Mythos nicht entziehen. Dabei sagt diese Frauenfigur in ihrer zunehmenden Folklorisierung und Klischeebefrachtung wahrscheinlich mehr über den Blick der Männer auf sie aus, als über diesen Frauentypen an sich. Nach van Gogh steigerten die "Fauves" (Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck) die Wirkung des "Leuchtlichts" durch die Konzentration auf reine Primärfarben und schufen Bilder, die gleichsam ihr eigenes Licht mitbringen. Den D…urchbruch schafften Matisse und Derain bei ihrem gemeinsamen Sommeraufenthalt im Fischerdorf Collioure. "Wir kommen zu einer neuen Auffassung über das Licht", berichtet Derain von der Mittelmeerküste. "Sie besteht in der Negierung der Schatten. Das Licht ist hier sehr stark, auch die Schatten leuchten." Die Entdeckung der reinen Farbe ging also mit der Absicht einher, die Farbe von ihrer materiellen Stofflichkeit zu lösen und als reines immaterielles Licht erstrahlen zu lassen. Das gilt auch für das deutsche Gegenstück der französischen Fauves- Bewegung, den Expressionismus, der in der Ausstellung mit farbigen Werken u.a. von Kirchner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Jawlensky und Nolde vertreten ist. Einen entscheidenden Schritt auf dem Weg zur Immaterialität vollzog Robert Delaunay, der mit seiner halbabstrakten Malerei versuchte, die Bewegung des Lichtes darzustellen. Künstler wie Klee, Mondrian, Kupka, Albers und vor allem Matisse mit seinen späten "papiers découpés" bilden dann die Brücke zur abstrakten monochromen Malerei der 50er Jahre mit Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman und Yves Klein.
