Édition en 4 parties , sur le monophysisme , le christianisme d'Éthiopie et d'Arménie , on y trouve le voyage du Joao Bermudez surnommé le Patriarche d'Abyssinie ou du Prêtre Jean , médecin ayant suivi en 1520 , Francisco Alvarez , l'ambassadeur du roi du Portugal en Abyssinie et demeuré 30 ans sur place , la mort de Christophe de Gama ,lors des guerres adalo-éthiopienne ,y est relatée. Mathurin Veyssière de la Croze fut bibliothécaire de l'électeur à Berlin et s'occupa en même temps de l'éducation du margrave de Schwedt. Son ami Leibniz le fit nommer professeur à l'université de Helmstadt. Plus tard, il devint l'éducateur de la princesse royale qui lui procura la chaire de philosophie au collège français. P1-2L.

L'ouvrage est illustré de planches gravées représentant des divinités hindoues (Brahma, Shiva et Vishnou). Mathurin Veyssière La Croze, ancien bénédictin de Saint-Maur, converti au calvinisme après la Révocation de l'Édit de Nantes, émigra à Bâle, puis à Berlin, où devint le bibliothécaire du roi de Prusse Frédéric Ier. Son Histoire du Christianisme des Indes est emblématique des querelles qui ont opposé protestants et catholiques dans les études indiennes : il dénonce entre autre les crimes des jésuites en Inde, référence aux chrétiens de Saint-Thomas, de Malabar, contraints de renoncer à leurs traditions théologiques nestoriennes pour adopter celles de l'Église romaine. Sa pensée s'appuie principalement sur les écrits, alors en grande partie inédits, de Ziegenbalg, missionnaire luthérien envoyé dans la colonie danoise de Tranquebar en 1706. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of a missionary history of India, based not only on the works of Goueva, Geddes, Bernier and Tavernier, but also on the manuscripts of the Lutheran missionary Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg (1682 -1719), whose Danish mission is described on pp. 536-566. It includes an account of the trial and execution of a King of Ormuz…for sodomy, "un peché infame fort connu à Rome aussi-bien qu'en Orient" (p. 340), and a defence of Islam against the common charge of being a religion established and maintained through war and violence (p. 525). The author "questions the logic of corrupt Portuguese authority over good Indians; religion is merely a pretext for European domination, it would be more appropriate for the Indian subjects to give religious instruction to their European rulers" (Teltscher). The illustrations show the Hindu gods Brahma, Ishvara (Shiva) and Vishnu. August Voelckner drew them, perhaps based on native reliefs, and Johann Jakob Kleinschmidt in Augsburg engraved them for La Croze in Berlin.Binding slightly rubbed, hinges worn, occasional slight foxing.
