Diesen ungewöhnlichen Stil, der untrennbar mit seinen herausragenden handwerklichen Fähigkeiten verbunden ist, entwickelte Alexandre Farto alias Vhils seit seinen ersten Graffiti-Tagen im Alter von 13 Jahren auf den Straßen seiner portugiesischen Heimat. Hier, wo nach dem Ende der faschistischen Diktatur in den 1970er Jahren im öffentlichen Raum ein visuelles Durch- und Übereinander aus sozialistischen Propagandaplakaten und den aufkommenden Werbeplakaten westeuropäischer und US-amerikanischer Prägung entstand, begann er an seinen Kunstwerken zu arbeiten. Vhils' fast skulpturale Kunst kann als produktive Form von Zerstörung verstanden werden - Putz wird aus Häuserwänden herausgemeißelt, Silhouetten in Metall gefräst, verstörend poetische Porträts mit Hammer und Meißel erschaffen. Vhils porträtiert den Menschen als überaus facettenreiches soziales Tier, das im Wechselspiel mit seiner Umwelt flüchtige Eindrücke hinterlässt, erschafft, verwischt, übertüncht und wieder vergisst. Alexandre Farto hat am Central Saint Martins College in London studiert. Seine Werke werden international ausgestellt und gefeiert und seine Arbeiten wurden unter anderem auf dem Cover der ehrwürdigen Times veröffentlicht. Dieses Buch ist seine erste Monografie.
