Condizione: Very good. Second Aldine edition of the landmark work of Roman history - with censorship markings to Erasmus's introduction, blackening out the name of the Dutch humanist whose works were placed on the Index of Prohibited Books. This edition was released by the Aldine Press just a year after Aldus's death; the second Aldine edition, it is the first to contain Erasmus's introductory remarks and annotations. This important addition caught the eye of the Roman Inquisition, which in 1559 banned the entirety of Erasmus's writings in the INDEX LIBRORUM PROHIBITORUM. As a result, the "writings of Erasmus [.] largely disappeared from Italy. For about two hundred years, starting in the mid sixteenth century, no new editions of his work were published there. Volumes by Erasmus were widely confiscated, and more or less vanished from collections" (Murphy, 124). In the case of this copy, Erasmus's name has been scribbled out in its first printed instance. This was a common method of enacting the Inquisition's censorship, signaling the condemnation but otherwise leaving the text intact. Suetonius's masterwork THE TWELVE CAESARS details the lives of Julius Caesar the subsequent 11 Emperors of the Roman Empire (ending with Domitian). Suetonius was ideally placed to assess the leadership qualities of the early Roman Emperors as the onetime personal secretary of the Emperor Hadrian, and his stories "provided inspiration for artists over centuries: Claudius cowering behind a curtain after the murder of Caligula; Nero 'fiddling while Rome burned'"; Domitian spearing flies; and more (Beard, 38). Octavo, 6'' 3.75''. 19th-century full brown calf, gilt cornerpieces, raised bands, blind rules, dark brown goatskin spine label. Aldine dolphin-and-anchor device on first and last leaves. Red ruled borders. E1r with ink manuscript censorship mark to "Erasmus Roterodamus." Some early ink underlining and a few (partly cropped) marginal notes in Latin. 320 ff. collated complete. Indentation to top of text block at headband, with some attendant discoloration. Modest rubbing to binding. Light staining to first leaf, some foxing here and there.
