L'auteur évoque l'émergence de l'" Ecole d'Alger " avec des artistes nés ou installés dans le pays, paysagistes ou peintres de mœurs, rappelle l'importance de la Villa Abd-el-Tif, la Médicis d'Alger, et nous conduit jusqu'aux artistes de " la génération du môle " ou aux tenants de l'abstraction. Après une introduction historique qui situe les mouvements et les conditions de la création artistique, Marion Vidal-Bué nous propose de suivre un itinéraire pictural à travers la ville, de la baie aux villas, du port à la Casbah, des terrasses aux jardins. Un dictionnaire de quatre cents notices biographiques regroupant peintres connus ou méconnus constitue un instrument précieux pour les collectionneurs et les professionnels de l'art. Marion Vidal-Bué a réalisé une recherche couvrant 500 artistes ayant oeuvré outre-Méditerranée au cours des cent trente-deux ans de présence française. Elle a sélectionné 400 noms, avec reproductions et notices, précédés d'un texte fort bien documenté sur la vie culturelle autour de Dar-Abdeitif, la "Villa Médicis algéroise", du mouvement algérianiste, de l'éditeur Chariot et d'écrivains tels Camus ou Sénac. Sur le ton de la littérature de voyage, l'auteur fait également revivre Alger et ses environs, depuis la Régence turque jusqu'à l'indépendance, en 1962. A côté de Delacroix, Chassériau, Fromentin, Dufy, Matisse, Renoir, Marquet, l'auteur a mis en lumière les peintres proprement "algériens" comme Famin, Benisti, Galliero, Simian, Marcello-Fabri, Mammeri, Brouty, Benaboura, Maisonseul.
