Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents long-forgotten insights into the life and work of 18th-century Brazilian poet and priest, Santa Rita Durão. Through the analysis of recently discovered personal documents, the author sheds new light on the poet's retracted condemnations of the Jesuit order. The text provides historical context to previously vague or contested details of Durão's life, including his birthdate, the dates of his arrival in Europe and return to Brazil, and the motivations behind his eventual flight from Portugal. By examining Durão's public retraction of his earlier critical statements against the Jesuits and his subsequent defense of the order in his epic poem, Caramuru, this book offers a nuanced understanding of the poet's complex relationship with the controversial organization. It also brings to light the broader historical context of religious persecution and political intrigue that shaped Durão's life and work, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of power and dissent during the 18th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
