With five engraved maps, as well as an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and a vignette title page to volume I. Occasional engraved head-pieces. All text in French. Contemporary full speckled calf, with raised bands, gilt titles to twin brown and black labels, and further gilt decoration to spines. All edges speckled red. Armorial bookplate of Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773) to front pastedown of each volume. Quite heavy browning to plates and title page, otherwise crisp, clean copies. Moderate wear to bindings, with rubbing especially to volume-number labels. Joints starting, but holding firmly. Very good. Des Vignoles' magnum opus, published in exile in Berlin during his long life outside France following the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685. This copy is from the library of essayist, courtier and wit Philip Stanhope, best known for his posthumously-published 'Letters to His Son' (1774).
