One-inch tear and creasing on dj rear. Businessman Viktor F. Bracht of Düsseldorf landed at Galveston in 1845 as an agent of the Adelsverein (a German nobles' society… for colonising Texas). He lived in and owned businesses in several communities during the next few years, including New Braunfels and San Antonio. An inveterate enthusiast, he traveled extensively, saw little about Texas he didn't like, and became a cheerleader for German emigration to the state. During the European upheavals and revolutions of 1848, he wrote and published this volume as an encouragement for ordinary Germans to say "fick dich" to Europe and try their luck in America. Practicing what he preached, he spent much of the rest of his life in Texas, dying there in 1887.

B & W portrait of the author and his family. The front board has a 3/8 in. thinned spot on the top edgs and a 1/8 in. spot rubbed through to the board on the bottom corner; the back joint has a 1/8 in. spot rubbed through to the board. The three blank papers in the back are foxed; the front fep is less so. The back free endpaper is missing. Two inches of the front endpaper is a little roughened on the fold. Text block ends have darkened. Photos e-mailed upon request. International shipping will require extra cost. Inscribed and Signed by the Au.
