Emphasis is made on articles about Finnish and Swedish visual arts: a painter Gustaf Wilhelm Finnberg creative work; historical overview of Artists' Association of Finland; artist Juho Makela biography and works; world-famous songwriter and composer Carl Michael Bellman and his best known collection of poems set to music named Fredman's songs; military officer, artist and architect Augustin Ehrensvärd's creation. Original designs, each signed and dated 1942 by the artist, for cartoons published in the Finnish armed forces journal Rintamamiehen toimitus. The relationship between Finland and Great Britain fluctuated during the Second World War. Britain was a prominent supporter of Finland against the Soviet Union in the Winter War, 1939-40. In 1941, Finland joined the Germans in the invasion of the Soviet Union, and Britain declared war that December. In 1944, Finland made peace with Britain and the Soviet Union, and switched sides to fight the Germans. Viljo Kojo (1891-1966) was among the leading Finnish illustrators in the first half of the century. He executed these cartoons in the first year of war between Finland and Britain, when Axis victory still looked very possible. They take a decidedly anti-Churchillian line, depicting: i) Churchill in front of a collapsing house titled "My home is my castle", being buried in tumbling bricks each labelled with examples of Britain's wartime failures, including Singapore, Crete, and the sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse. ii) Churchill in a dhoti next to Gandhi, who reads to him about British defeats from a newspaper. iii) Churchill in a top hat, smoking a cigar, and walking with his well-dressed wife, while shrugging off a badly beaten Stalin in rags and bandages - a reference to Stalin's ongoing demands for Britain to open a second front. iv) Churchill conspires with a racist caricature of a Jewish businessman.
