Mikä vaikutus kouluhyvinvoinnilla on tähän kaikkeen? Teos on seitsemäs osa Suomen Akatemian Tutkitusti-kirjasarjaa. 9789524954488.

Georg Henrik von Wright (19162003) is perhaps best known for his pioneering results in philosophical logic, his important influence in the development of analytic philosophy, and for his substantial contribution to the investigation, interpretation, and editing of Ludwig Wittgenstein's literary estate. In addition he made a significant contribution to a number of other fields of academic philosophy, built bridges across different philosophical traditions, and participated actively in public discussion on burning global issues and events. He believed in the power of rational social and cultural debate and challenged people to give up their baseless illusions, participate in discussions, and search together for constructive solutions. In this collection of essays a number of friends, students and colleagues of Georg Henrik von Wright share their personal memories of him as a great thinker and a beloved gentleman.

Neuware - Many historians and philosophers of logic have claimed that during the 19th century, before Gottlob Frege's Begriffsschrift (1879), there was a long period of stagnation or even of decline in the field of logic. The aim of this book is to show that such an evaluation of 19th century logic is misdirected and needs to be corrected. A Hundred Years of Logical Investigations discusses both philosophical and mathematical efforts to reform logic in Germany from Kant's Kritik der reinen Vernunft (1781) up to Frege's Begriffsschrift (1879). Amongst others, J.F. Herbart, M.W. Drobisch, G.W.F. Hegel, F.A. Trendelenburg, R. Graßmann, and E. Schröder are discussed in addition to Kant and Frege with regard to their thoughts about the place, the task, and the justification of logic not only as a philosophical discipline, but also as a formal and fundamental theory of science.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume is based on papers presented at the XV Internordic Philosophical Symposium in Helsinki in May, 2004. It covers a number of important and timely philosophical issues: naturalism - its strengths, weaknesses, and limits - in metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of science; the relation between philosophical and scientific methodology; the ethics of science and, more generally, the place of science in society; the relation between the natural sciences and the humanities; as well as the ways in which scientific progress may challenge traditional philosophical concepts and problems and, on the other hand, the ways in which philosophical arguments and/or artistic innovations - or philosophical interpretations of them - may challenge some claims made in the name of science. In addition to several Scandinavian authors, a number of leading philosophers from outside the Nordic countries are among the contributors to this volume. This collection of original articles thus contributes to the current lively philosophical debates on the relations between science, philosophy, and society.
