Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Complete. A resolutely sturdy copy of this book about the collection at Parhham House. In 2017 the interior of the house and all of its contents were utterly destroyed by a fire (possibly begun by its then owner). At some stage the book has been subjected to damp storage conditions. Leading from the back, the pages have receding (in both size and intensity) areas of staining (mostly to the top corner areas). The green boards are much worn, scuffed, marked all about. Vellum spine (grubby) that has been repaired at head and foot. The boards are weary but steady and sound. The contents are of laid, watermarked, paper. The paper is untrimmed. The end papers are tanned. The contents, aside from that described above, are amiable. They are thick, bold, very certain, congenial, diligent, clean, clear, at times even smart, always decent and bountiful. Please note that due to the weight of the book, should the book need be posted to the outside of South Africa, extra postal charges may be required. fk. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. Folio. pp vi, 84. 74 photographic plates by Eustace Calland. Original parchment-backed grey-blue cloth, lettered in black on the spine. Top edge gilt. Printed on laid paper. An architectural gem, Parnham House was built during the reign of Elizabeth I and redesigned by John Nash in the early nineteenth century. It was utterly destroyed in 2017 when the owner Michael Treichl was thought to have deliberately set fire to the place. He committed suicide a couple of months later. Free endpapers lightly tanned. Very good indeed in the rare dustwrapper which is heavily chipped and torn in places.

Twelve chromolithographic illustrations on eleven leaves. Bookplate on the front pastedown of Frederick DuCane Godman (1834-1919) an English lepidopterist, entomologist and ornithologist. He was one of the twenty founding members of the British Ornithologists' Union. He closely studied the fauna and flora of Central America and had several plants name after him, he also collected Iznik, Hispano-Moresque and early Iranian pottery. He corresponded with other scientists of his time including Charles Darwin and lived at South Lodge, Lower Beeding where his ceramics collection was kept. The so called 'first series' is the first work on carpets in English, and not to be confounded with the very similar, but later, work from 1893 (second series), which is much more common than the first series from 1882. Faint foxing to endpapers, cloth a little mottled, with some wear and slight splitting at lower spine, overall sound, near very good with very clean text and plates.
