Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, 1976. First edition. 145pp. Printed wraps. Very good or better, with toning and light soiling to covers and textblock edges. A work purporting to offer explanations and guidance for those interested in crossdressing, as well as their (female) partners, incorporating both original texts and reprints of earlier pamphlets and essays; an important summae of the beliefs and tenets of Virginia Prince (1912-2009), one of the first and most important figures in the field of heterosexual transvestite activism. Notable for publishing groundbreaking magazine Transvestia beginning in 1960, Prince also founded the support organization soon to be known as the Foundation for Personality Expression (FPE). In 1976, the FPE merged with another crossdressing group to become the Society for the Second Self, or Tri-Ess, under which name it still exists today.

Prince, Virginia. The Transvestite and His Wife. Los Angeles, 1967. First edition, second printing. 142 pages. Dark blue gradient paperback with pink text. Virginia Prince was a transgender woman and activist who began her identity expression at the age of 12. As an adult, Prince began working as a research assistant and lecturer in pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco after going through a divorce from her wife and being disowned by her socialite parents because of her identity. During this time, Prince took advantage of the university's small collection of medical literature on transvestism. She started the magazine Transvestia with 100 dollars in donations, and the publication grew to become the first widely distributed transgender and cross-dressing magazine. The Transvestite and His Wife is written in six sections which explore the difficulties and benefits of heterosexual relationships in which one partner engages in transvestism; Section I: Introduction to the Subject of Transvestism, Section II: Problems of Understanding and Adjustment, Section III: Other Viewpoints, Section IV: Letters from Wives of Transvestites, Section V: Transvestism and Children, and Section VI: Epilogue. Prince writes from her perspective as a trans woman attracted to women and incorporates letters written by cross-dressers and partners of cross-dressers to her magazine Transvestia. The book attempts to dispel myths which equate transvestism with homosexuality or even necessarily with the desire for a sex change. Prince argues that transvestism can have a healthy and accepted place within heterosexual relationships, especially considering that men who dress as women may approach femininity with increased respect and understanding. She backs up her argument with a series of letters from women in relationships with cross-dressers, who explain their individual experiences, fears and anxieties, journeys to understanding, and eventual happiness after learning about and accepting their partners' transvestism. Very good condition. An early examination of cross-dressing in heterosexual relationships by trans activist Virginia Prince.

TV Clip-Sheet gathered mainstream newspaper and magazine clippings on cross dressing, female impersonation, passing, theatrical performance, arrest and public scandal for readers already connected to Chevalier Publications' transvestite print network. These six issues preserve the publication's method of reprinting sensational press language, with headlines including "Princeton Lads Put Show On The Road," "The Amazing Dilemma of Kenneth Johnson," "Men Were Girls!," "A Tale of Two Sexes," "He Got Idea From Mother," "He Was a Man All the Time," and "The Lady Is an Undercover Man." The sheets record how mid century newspapers described gender nonconformity through entertainment, crime, deception, medical curiosity, and nightclub publicity, while Chevalier repackaged that coverage for a specialized readership. The group links the broader press record to the same Los Angeles publisher behind Transvestia, placing mass media accounts beside the private mail circulation through which cross dressing readers followed public cases and underground performance. TV Clip-Sheet. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, 1960s to 1970s. Archive of 6 issues: Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 38. [1] TV Clip-Sheet. No. 1. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, 1962. Two full pages. Opens with "Princeton Lads Put Show On The Road" and includes a "Personality Parade" feature naming "some of America's foremost female impersonators," along with clippings headed "I Tried Both Sexes," "Dennis Day as Sophie Tucker," "Dual Role for Alastair Sim," and "Nellee's No Lady But He Wears Long Skirts." [2] TV Clip-Sheet. No. 4. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, circa 1960s. Includes "The Amazing Dilemma of Kenneth Johnson," a large feature on Kenneth Johnson, plus additional clippings headed "This Beautiful Gal, Her 'Girl' Pal Was Really a Man," "Women's Clothes Were His Disguise," "The Model Who Fooled London," and "A Feminine Man." The sheet centers on press accounts of passing, exposure, and feminine presentation framed as mystery or deception. [3] TV Clip-Sheet. No. 5. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, circa 1960s. Includes "American Male Has Donned Ugly Look," "Men Were Girls!," and additional small clippings on masculine and feminine appearance. The issue preserves the period's tabloid vocabulary around gender presentation, including the recurrent treatment of clothing as both social evidence and comic spectacle. [4] TV Clip-Sheet. No. 6. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, circa 1960s. Includes "A Tale of Two Sexes," "Victoria is Victorious," and a boxed Chevalier Publications announcement titled "Look Sisters," offering book and magazine material through the publisher's mail order network. The issue ties press clippings to Chevalier's direct circulation of transvestite reading material. [5] TV Clip-Sheet. No. 7. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, circa 1960s. Includes "He Got Idea From Mother," "News of Transvestia, Female Impersonators and Related Fields," and a notice for "All Points West" in Los Angeles. The issue combines syndicated human interest clippings with Chevalier's own announcements for readers following transvestite and female impersonator culture. [6] TV Clip-Sheet. No. 38. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, circa 1970s. Includes "The Lady Is an Undercover Man," "Here's the Oddest Turn in Showbiz!," "Mr. or Should I Say Mrs. La Rue Adds a Touch of Culture," and clippings on stage performers, disguise, and theatrical impersonation. The issue continues the series' later focus on press coverage of performers and public exposure narratives. TV Clip-Sheet occupied a different function from Transvestia's essays, fiction, advice, and letters: it collected outside press coverage and made it legible to a readership already negotiating secrecy, public curiosity, and the risks of being named in print. The repeated newspaper language of masquerade, disguise, "really a man," and "undercover man" records the terms through which American popular media framed cross dressing before later transgender vocabulary gained wider public circulation. Folded as issued with light toning, minor edge wear, and handling creases; overall good condition. A compact run of Chevalier's serial preserving the press record that surrounded, distorted, and publicized cross dressing and female impersonation in mid century American print.

Virginia Prince's Transvestia gave cross dressing and trans feminine readers a sustained print forum during a period when gender variance was commonly met with police scrutiny, medical pathologization, family secrecy, and postal caution. These four issues preserve the magazine in its mature Los Angeles Chevalier Publications format, with recurring departments including "Letters to the Editor," "Person to Person," "Virgin Views," fiction, personal narratives, and practical or cultural articles. The contents name Prince as editor across the group and record the editorial circle around her, including Mary Nielson, Susanna Valenti, and Sheila Niles in No. 61. The run moves from 1970 to 1977, before Carol Beecroft's later editorial succession, and captures the magazine's continued use of serialized community discourse, reader experience, and Prince's Full Personality Expression vocabulary to define cross dressing in terms acceptable to its heterosexual readership. Transvestia. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, 1970 to 1977. Archive of 4 issues: Vol. XI, No. 61; Vol. XIII, No. 73; Vol. XIII, No. 75; and Vol. XV, No. 90. [1] Prince, Virginia, ed. Transvestia. Vol. XI, No. 61. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, 1970. Includes "These Eventful Years," "A Family Vacation," "A Doctor's Views on Transvestism," "News From Scandinavia," "Measure Right to Look Your Best," "A 'Senior' Transvestia!," "Our Sorority," "Who is a Transvestite!," "Editorial Emanations," and "Person to Person." The issue names Virginia Prince as editor, Mary Nielson as editor's assistant, Susanna Valenti as contributing editor, and Sheila Niles as literary editor. [2] Prince, Virginia, ed. Transvestia. Vol. XIII, No. 73. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, 1972. Includes the fiction pieces "Night Watchman," "One Afternoon in a Department Store," and "An FP from Outer Space," the article "A Japanese Sister," the true story "Another Possibility," "Letters," "Virgin Views: The Masculine/Feminine Game," "FP Moments in Advertising," "Editorial Emanations," and "Person to Person." The issue identifies Prince as editor and Mary Nielson as editor's assistant. [3] Prince, Virginia, ed. Transvestia. Vol. XIII, No. 75. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, 1972. Includes "Charm School," "Boys Must Be Girls," "You've Come A Long Way Baby," "Cultural Responsibility of the FP," "The First Time," "Why and Why," "An Interesting Day," "Reincarnation of Richard," "Virgin Views," and "Person to Person." The issue combines fiction, history, true story, article, letters, and Prince's regular commentary departments. [4] Prince, Virginia, ed. Transvestia. Vol. XV, No. 90. Los Angeles: Chevalier Publications, 1977. Includes "Exposure," "Chrissie," "The Way It Was," "TV's on CB's," "A Day From My Diary," "Private Robert Shurtleff," "The Mardi Gras Drag," "Letters to the Editor," and "Virgin Views." The issue's contents bring together fiction, historical writing, diary narrative, a story invoking Revolutionary War soldier Deborah Sampson's male military identity under the name Robert Shurtleff, and an article on CB radio culture. Founded in 1960, Transvestia became one of the longest running American periodicals centered on cross dressing and trans feminine experience, using small press circulation, reader submissions, correspondence, and recurring editorial departments to create a print community before broader public language around transgender identity had stabilized. These issues preserve the magazine's 1970s middle period, including its blend of respectability politics, heterosexual cross dresser address, self-help language, international notices, and first person accounts of secrecy, dress, marriage, public exposure, and social contact. Light wrapper wear, mild toning, some edge and corner wear, and faint handling marks, with contents intact; overall very good condition. A focused four issue sequence preserving Transvestia's Los Angeles editorial structure, recurring departments, and reader-centered writing during the decade before its final editorial transition.
