Deckelfuss, sonst tadell. - Die von Louise Bachofen-Burckhardt (1845?1920) zum Andenken an ihren verstorbenen Gatten 1904 errichtete Professor Johann Jakob Bachofen-Stiftung war der zahlenmäßig größte Depositär in der Altmeistersammlung des Kunstmuseums Basel. Sie nannte 303 Gemälde vom Spätmittelalter bis an die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert ihr Eigen, die sie 2015 dem Museum schenkte. Unter diesen befinden sich Hauptwerke von Bartolomeo Vivarini, Lucas Cranach d. Ä., Hans Memling, Jan Brueghel d. Ä., Frans II. Francken, Dirck Hals, Nicolaes Maes, Nicolaes Berchem, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan van Goyen, Harmen Steenwyck, Rachel Ruysch, Jean-Étienne Liotard und Alexandre-François Desportes.Im vorliegenden Band wird erstmals dieser außergewöhnliche Bestand gemäß dem heutigen Forschungsstand gewürdigt und das Leben der Sammlerin und Stifterin nachgezeichnet.
