Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. This is "The Mirror of Conrad" a biography and study of the works of the great Polish / English novelist Joseph Conrad, published in 1955 by T. Werner Laurie. This is the hardcover Second Printing, complete with dust-jacket. The book is bound in red, paper-covered… boards, which were given a surface texture to look like cloth. The book is illustrated from photographs ; of interest are the two photographs, one of Conrad's father, Apollo Naleez Korzeniowski; and the other of his mother, Evelina Korzeniowski, née Bobrowska. Excerpted from the jacket write-up : "For E. H. Visiak the mirror of Conrad is that long row of tales and novels which are so astonishing a legacy from the first quarter of this century. It is a mirror in parts crystal clear, and in others clouded and crazed; yet - to find the whole man - it must everywhere be scrutinised with minute attention, and this is what Mr. Visiak has sought to do. Parts of Conrad's works are frankly autobiographical; parts are reputedly so; and parts are 'pure romance' - yet these, too, reflect some essential facets of this strange, impressive, and fascinating genius. For Conrad was, indeed, a man of formidable genius, in his life as well as in his work. This biography is at once a record of that life and a study of the work it produced. E. H. Visiak has studied Conrad's works for fifty years, and some of his earlier criticism upon it was praised by Conrad himself." TITLE : The Mirror of Conrad AUTHOR : E. H. Visiak (Pen name of Edward Harold Physick, 1878 - 1972) IMPRINT : T. Werner Laurie PLACE : London DATE : (1955) EDITION : Unstated Second Printing (bound in paper-covered boards with black lettering on spine, rather than cloth with gilt lettering) STATUS : OP SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : This copy includes the publisher's printed order form, which is still complete, intact, and unused. PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade hardcover; Contains five plate illustrations, including the frontispiece, which is a reproduction of a pencil sketch of Conrad. The illustrations through the text are taken from photographs, and printed on calendered paper (as is the frontispiece); contains a facsimile of a letter sent by Conrad; contains a Preface, a bibliography, and an Index; 255 pages; approximately 4 3/4" x 8 3/8"; bright red, paper-covered boards and spine, with black lettering on spine; pictorial dust-jacket (with portrait of Conrad on rear panel. CONDITION -- BOOK : NEAR VERY GOOD -- JACKET : VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Slight compression to spine extremities, else cover is clean and bright; text-block edges display slight weathering, and a touch of foxing (to the fore-edge) where internal foxing extends to the external. BINDING -- Solid INTERIOR -- The end-papers have toning and foxing (offset toning on the front and rear free end-paper); the most noticeable imperfection to the interior is the presence of a good deal of foxing to the paper, quite noticeable on the title page, front material, and the first few leaves, and diminishing til there seems to be none after the last plate illustration (facing page 48). (The prominent foxing is the reason for the condition grade.) The publisher affixed a label (Printed in Great Britain) to the copyright page which has caused toning on the title page; Else the interior is clean and presentable. DUST-JACKET -- Slight foxing to front panel ; a small smudge to rear panel; a tiny tear to the bottom of the front panel - a small split to the foot of the front flap; spine slightly faded; surface rub is mild. Front flap still has publisher's original price. The whole displays well.
