"The book presents awide spectrum of scientific research, viewed from the perspective of the centenary of the First World War, the "Great War of White Men" and supposedly the "war to end all wars", which from the resulting postcolonial and multicultural viewpoints irreversibly altered not only Europe but the entire world. It addresses the tension between local ethnic or esoteric traditions, and cosmopolitan rhetoric in political and aesthetic narratives while the global map, especially the Old Continent, fundamentally changed. Newly formed states established their identity not only through the traditional visual arts, but more profoundly in new building works, contemporary design, filmmaking and photography, and popular culture, including functional typography, transformative modes of social communication and the general conditions of everyday life, accelerating the processes of emancipation of the "imagined communities" and intensifying the discourses of marginalized "others". Exploring grounded studies of previously unknown archival materials and deploying the latest methodological approaches of the humanities, the book also presents complex strategies of dissemination, translation and the instrumentalization of modern visual language, e.g. in propaganda, especially in the so-called "peripheral" regions. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the international avant-garde network in the creation and transfer of aesthetic and sociopolitical ideas in modern magazines and new media, as well as in the examination of how the understanding of (supra)nationality and the pre- or post-WWI avant-garde was affected by historiography and the limits of universality, specifically from the 1950s until the present day." Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. An examination of the cultural and artistic consequences of post-WWI nationalism in Europe. World War I was a seismic event in Europe whose most concrete ramifications were the sweeping changes made to maps of the continent after 1918. A number of new, independent states were established in the wake of the Armistice, and these tectonic developments found varied expression in the arts, transforming the image of the continent both cartographically and artistically. This new edited collection focuses primarily on how modernism and the avant-garde responded to these geographic changes in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, and Scandinavia. The contributors explore the clashes between the national, the transnational, and the cosmopolitan as they played out in diverse artistic genres. In many countries across Europe, the struggle for national independencewhich in many cases began in the nineteenth century and culminated only after World War Ihad important cultural and artistic consequences, which are only beginning to be understood. This bookcopublished with Artefactumprovides a crucial new lens to rethink the methodological tools used to understand the complexity and the multiplicity of avant-garde forms in twentieth-century Europe, encouraging scholars to reconstruct global cultural history without tired nationalistic approaches. Teige studied history of art at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague He devoted himself to extensive theoretical, publicist, lecturing, editiorial and organizational activities as well as being the leading initiator and representative of Czech avantgarde culture between the wars, primarily in the field of art, literature, architecture, photography, film and theatre. In 1920 he became a co-founder of the artistic group Dev?tsil (1920-1932) and the first chairman of Leva fronta (Left Front) (1929-1935). In 1934 he became a member of the Prague surrealist group, and was its spokesman until 1947. In the field of art theory he was a leading figure in the establishing of the programmes of proletarian art, poetism and constructivism. As an artist, his early paintings and graphics were influenced by cubism. Later on, he devoted himself to typography and book design characterized by constructivism. Within the framework of poetism, he developed the "pictorial poem". From 1934 until his death he worked systematically on the creation of surrealist collages. Karel Teige's most significant publications include Modern Czech Architecture (1924), Film (1925), Construction and Poem (1927), The World Which Laughs (1928), The Smallest Apartment (1932), The Art Fair (1936), a monograph on the artists Jan Zrzavý (1923) and Styrsky and Toyen (1938) which he published together with Vitezslav Nezval. His Manifesto of Poetism (1928) was also issued in collaboration with Nezval. In the 1940s he worked on questions concerning the philosophy of modern art in the book The Developmental Changes in Art, which had to wait until 1967 until it was allowed to be published for the first time.
