Deutsche Schachzeitung was the first German chess magazine. Founded in 1846 by Ludwig Bledow under the title Schachzeitung der Berliner Schachgesellschaft, it took the name Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1872. (Another magazine used the title Deutsche Schachzeitung from 1846 to 1848.) When it ceased publication in December 1988 it was the oldest existing magazine in the world, having been published regularly since its founding in 1846 except for a five-year break (1945-1949) during World War II. Since January 1989, the Deutsche Schachzeitung was merged in the Deutsche-Schachblatter - Schach-Report which was edited in Hollfeld. The resulting magazine appeared with the names of both former magazines on its cover till December 1996. Since January 1997, this magazine again was merged in the Berlin magazine Schach. The resulting magazine kept the names Schach and Schach-Report on its cover for one year, but the name Deutsche Schachzeitung had disappeared from the cover. Since 1998, the magazine appears under the simple Schach. However, the table of contents is still headed by the names Deutsche Schachzeitung, Deutsche Schachblatter and Schach-Report. Some what of a scarce publication, Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana collection lacked volumes 1-5. A Large and extensive amount of period information on chess. With 36 competitors and 326 games played, Ostende 1906 was one of the biggest chess tournaments of the time. Only Lasker and Tarrasch opted not to participate, making it also an immensely powerful event. The manager, Isidor Gunsberg, had the difficult taks before him to discover a system of playing that would satisfy the chess world and not fagtiuge the players. The thirty-six players were divided into four groups. In the first round group A played against Group B. There were two more rounds with a system of promotion and relegating and in the last round the top nine played against each other. Their final placings were: 1st Carl Schlechter, 2d Geza Maroczy, 3d A Rubinstein tied for 4th through 6th were A Burn, O S Bernstein and R Teichmann, 7th Frank Marshall, 8th David Janowski and 9th J Perlis. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5223) First edition. This was the Fifth German Chess Congress of the Deutschen Schachbund (DSB - German Chess Federation). It took place in Frankfurt am Main in 1887, the venue being the Assembly Rooms of the Zoological Gardens. German chess benefitted from the rapid expansion of the economy after 1880, the period known as "Gründerzeit" (Founding period) in which many large and soon to be prominent industrial companies were created such as: Krupp, Stinnes, Hoesch and Thyssen. A period of economic prosperity extending until the First World War provided the means for German chess to stage large international tournaments. Using Chessmetrics' data, the Fifth German Chess Congress was the strongest tournament held between 1885 and 1895. With the exceptions of Wilhelm Steinitz (1st) and James Mason (8th), it involved all the ten top players of the time. The tournament comprised: a Master Tournament, a Major Tournament ("Hauptturnier"), a First-Class Tournament, a Second-Class Tournament and a "Free tournament" for "for participants in the major and minor tournaments". Due to a small number of players, the Hauptturnier was divided into two preliminary groups, the top players of each group then progressing into the final "Siegergruppe" (Winning group). Bauer won the Siegergruppe and so won the Hauptturnier. George Henry Mackenzie won the first prize of 1,000 Marks. Joseph Henry Blackburne and Max Weiss shared second and third prizes of 750 + 500 Marks. Von Bardeleben fourth prize - 300 Marks and contributing author of the tournament book. Berger and Tarrasch shared fifth and sixth prizes; Englisch seventh prize and Paulsen and Schallopp shared eight prize. Tarrasch's score is notable. After a very poor start, he played with great determination to come in with the second highest tally of wins (11) along with Blackburn. His loses, meant, however, that he could only secure a share of fifth and sixth places. Similarly, Paulsen with 10 wins and 8 losses could only come in to share eighth prize. Outside of the prize list, Burn had 9 wins but 10 loses.
