(= Monografias de matematica, Bd. 1). - Aus der Bibliothek des Schweizer Mathematikers Kurt Strebel. «Kurt Strebel (20. April 1921 in Wohlen - 26. Schlagworte: Mathematik Naturwissenschaft.

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. 57 pp. Original printed wrappers, rebacked with new paper spine. Wrappers extensively remargined. Good. NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS: ABEBooks allows only 5 photos. I think these photos convey the extent of the restoration on this copy, but I can supply more photos of the restored wrappers, upon request. First Separate Printing. Pencil corrections in the text on pp. 27 and 45. I don't pretend to understand the following quotations, but they come from authoritative sources. Von Neumann "developed between 1927 [the paper offered here] and 1929 a new mathematical framework of the theory which subsequently proved to be the most suitable formalism of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics as we use it today [1966], as well as of its extensions, the relativistic quantum mechanics of particles and the quantum theory of fields" (Max Jammer, The Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics, pp. 314-315. "Von Neumann's most famous work in theoretical physics is his axiomatization of quantum mechanics. When he began work in that field in 1927 [in the paper offered here], the methods used by its founders were hard to formulate in precise mathematical terms: 'operators' on 'functions' were handled without much consideration of their domain of definition or their topological properties and it was blithely assumed that such 'operators,' when self-adjoint, could always be 'diagonalized' (as in the finite dimensional case), at the expense of introducing 'Dirac functions' as 'eigenvectors'. Von Neumann showed that mathematical rigor could be restored by taking as basic axioms the assumptions that the states of a physical system were points of a Hilbert space and that the measurable quantities were Hermitian (generally unbounded) operators densely defined in that space. This formalism, the practical use of which became available after von Neumann had developed the spectral theory of unbounded Hermitian operators (1929), has survived subsequent developments of quantum mechanics and is still the basis of non relativistic quantum theory; with the introduction of the theory of distributions, it has even become possible to interpret its results in a way similar to Dirac's original intuition" (J. Dieudonné, in D.S.B. 14: 91). The D.S.B. is the Dictionary of Scientific Biography, a magnificent reference work in 18 volumes.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 30 pp. Original wrappers. Vertical crease in first leaf (1/2). Very Good. First Separate Printing. John von Neumann's first publication on quantum mechanics. Quoting the second paragraph of the paper: "The present paper has emerged from a lecture, given by D. Hilbert in the Winter Semester 1926/27 on the recent development of quantum mechanics, and it was prepared with the more essential help of L. Nordheim. Important parts of the mathematical execution originate from J. v. Neumann. The final write-up of this paper was provided by L. Nordheim. We believe that the Nordheim formulation of Jordan's and Dirac's ideas, which we have worked out here, have become substantially simpler and therefore more transparent and more easily understandable" (Chris Mitsch's English translation in 2019). "It was most fortunate for the development of our theory that Heisenberg's appeal to pure mathematicians was answered, at the right moment, in Göttingen by Hilbert himself. Since he had been consulted on numerous mathematical aspects of the theory ever since its inception, quantum mechanics was no terra incognita to him. In the fall of 1926 he began a systematic study of its mathematical foundations. Hilbert s approach was, of course, that of a pure mathematician. In his quest for logical rigor he elaborated Jordan's semi-axiomatic theory, based as it was on the notion of probability amplitudes. He first investigated the physical requirements which these amplitudes have to satisfy so as to lead to results in agreement with experience, and then searched for an analytical apparatus in terms of which these requirements could be formulated and satisfied. . . . Although Hilbert's contention concerning the finality of the analytical apparatus . . . was soon to be disproved, his conception of a separate analytical apparatus through the interpretation of which empirical relations can be brought into the form of mathematical statements became a basic element of the methodology of modern theoretical physics" (Jammer, Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics, pp. 309-310). Copy of Egon Orowan, with his ink name stamp "Orowan" on the front wrapper.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Pp. 370-427. Original printed wrappers. Near Fine. First separate printing. "In his earliest work with operators . . ., von Neumann recognized the need for a detailed study of families of operators. Many of the subtler properties of an operator are to be found only in the internal algebraic structure of the algebra of polynomials in the operator (and its closures relative to various operator topologies) or in the action of this algebra on the underlying Hubert space. His interest in ergodic theory, group representations, and quantum mechanics contributed significantly to von Neumann's realization that a theory of operator algebras was the next important stage in the development of this area of mathematics. The dictates of the subject itself had called for this development. In [the [paper offered here], von Neumann initiated the study of the so-called 'rings of operators' also called 'W*-algebras ' and, most recently, 'von Neumann algebras' (by Dixmier). The latter term seems particularly apt. . ." (Richard V. Kadison, "Theory of Operators, Part II. Operator Algebras", Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, Vol. 64, no. 3, part 2, May 1958, p. 61).

First edition of each work in this ground-breaking four volume work on game theory. Octavo, 4 volumes, original orange wrappers. Volume one is signed by contributors John von Neumann and John Nash on the title page. Contains the article by the Nobel Prize-winning economist entitled, "A Simple Three Person Poker Game." Volume II is signed by contributors Kenneth J. Arrow and John Milnor. Volume III is signed by contributors W.H. Fleming and Philip Wolfe on the title page. Volume IV is signed by contributors Robert J. Aumann and Martin Shubik. In near fine condition with some rubbing and wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional set, most rare and desirable signed by von Neumann and other contributors. Volume I contains: G.W. Brown & John Von Neumann, âSolutions of Games by Differential Equationsâ (pp. 73-79); John Nash & Lloyd Shapleyâs important paper: âA Simple Three-person Poker Gameâ (105-16), and other papers by Hermann, Weyle, Gale, Dresher, Kuhn, McKinsey, et al. Volume II contains: Lloyd Shapleyâs âA Value for n-Person Gamesâ (pp. 307-17): A âremarkable 1953 paper⦠There he proposed that it might be possible to evaluate, in a numerical way, the âvalueâ of playing a game. The particular function he derived for this purpose, which has come to be called the Shapley value, has been the focus of sustained interest among students of cooperative game theory ever sinceâ (Alvin Roth, who shared the 2012 Nobel Prize with Shapley, Chapter 1: âIntroduction to the Shapley Value,â in Roth, The Shapley Value: Essays in Honor of Lloyd S. Shapley, Cambridge University Press, 1988). Also contains Von Neumannâs âA Certain Zero-Sum Two-Person Game Equivalent to the Optimal Assignment Problemâ (pp. 5-12) and D.B. Gillies, J.P. Mayberry, & Von Neumann, âTwo Variants of Pokerâ (pp. 13-50). The latter is the supplement to Von Neumann and Morgensternâs Theory of Games and Economic Behavior promised in the footnote on p. 196 of the second edition. Volume III contributors include Gale, Karlin, Kemeny, Oxtoby, Scarf, Shapley, et al. Volume IV contributors include Nobel Laureates Harsanyi, Aumann, and Shapley, as well as Kalisch, Von Neumann (âOn the Theory of Games of Strategy,â pp. 13-42), Shubik, et al. Shapley won the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for 2012, commonly known as the Nobel Prize in Economics.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Von Neumann's contribution removed from the journal and bound in gray cloth, titled on the front board in gilt. Octavo. 77, [1]pp. Author and title written on the spine, one corner of the text block a little bumped, else very near fine. An article discussing infinite tensor products of Hilbert spaces and the algebras acting on them. Arthur S. Wightman's copy with his ownership signature ("A.S. Wightman") and his notations to the formulae on four pages. Wightman was one of the founders of the axiomatic approach to quantum field theory, and originated the set of Wightman axioms. His work, including such titles as *PCT, Spin and Statistics and All That*, frequently cites the work of von Neumann. Although we wouldn't claim to understand the writings of either mathematician, we know an important association when we see one.
