Lorillard IV (1833-1905) was an American tobacco manufacturer and Thoroughbred race horse owner. 1916 8 1/4" x 6" An avid sportsman, Pierre Lorillard and his brother, George Lyndes Lorillard, were both major figures in Thoroughbred horse racing. In 1874, Pierre's horse, Saxon, won the Belmont Stakes. Although his horse "Parole" finished fourth in the 1876 Kentucky Derby, it went on to race with considerable success both in the United States and in Europe. In the 19th century, shipping horses from New York to Louisville, Kentucky was a major undertaking and as the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes were both held in the New York City area in the period, neither of the Lorillard brothers entered horses again in the Kentucky Derby. Lorillard established Rancocas Stable, named for the New Jersey town where he owned a country house. He spent time in Paris and in England where, in 1881, his horse Iroquois became the first American-owned and bred horse to win a European classic race. Ridden by the champion English jockey Fred Archer, Iroquois won The Derby and then went on to capture the St. Leger Stakes as well. Lorillard had other successes in England, notably with the horse named for the actor David Garrick, which won the 1901 Chester Cup ridden by American jockey, Danny Maher. …

First edition, one of 300 copies, inscribed by Woodward to J.R. Sears. "This was Connett's first major work in fine book production. It was contracted through Ernest Gee, and Mr. Woodward spared no expense ." (Siegel). William Woodward was an American banker from a prominent family who also became a major owner and breeder in thoroughbred horse racing. He amassed a great collection of paintings related to thoroughbred horses over his lifetime and published this work as a gift to his friends to share his love of horses and horse racing. The author of the accompanying descriptions, Walter Vosburgh, was a turf historian who was the official handicapper for The Jockey Club and various other racing associations from 1894 to 1934. Woodward recollects in the Foreword: "Mr. Walter S. Vosburgh.and I were talking one day of my paintings, and I expressed the wish that he should come to see them. When he came one Sunday afternoon a few years ago, we spent an exceedingly agreeable afternoon together, for Mr. Vosburgh is so full of the lore of the Turf that every picture had its special meaning and every horse its special anecdote.I had asked him if he would write sketches of the principal horses whose portraits I then had. Comprising 35 [of 68] engraved plates, proofs after letters, after the original paintings by Stubbs, Herring, Hall, Sartorius, and others, colored by hand, most marked "Approved WW" in ink or pencil in margins, with occasional notes to the colorists. 1 vols. 7 x 10 inches. "This was Connett's first major work in fine book production. It was contracted through Ernest Gee, and Mr. Woodward spared no expense ." (Siegel, p. 52). The idea had come to Mr. Woodward, whose Belair Stables bred some of the greatest racehorses of the 1920s and 1930s, to do a book about the portraits he owned after listening to Mr. Vosburgh regale him with stories about them one Sunday afternoon. The portraits include Stubbs' 'Godolphin Arabian' and a vast stable of paintings by Herring Senior, racing scenes, and other works. "The twenty-one copy edition of Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses is one of the rarest works of its kind in America. .
