Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Nguyen Than (1853 - 1914) was a key figure in a tumultuous period in Vietnamese history as the French were establishing their colonial regime over the ruling southern Nguyen dynasty in Central Vietnam. He was the son of Nguyen Tan (1822 - 1871) who the Nguyen king of the Great South (Dai Na…m) had assigned to the unique position of "pacification and consolation officer" (Tieu Phu Su) of a huge "reservation" for the highland minorities in central Vietnam, called the "Mountain Protection" (Son Phong) or "Subduing Barbarians" (Tran Man). Nguyen Than has been a controversial figure in Vietnamese history because of his role in the conflict with the French in Central Vietnam, ultimately siding with the Nguyen court in support of the French colonial role, and especially in the final demise of the opposition movement led by his former colleague, Phan Dinh Phung. In this book Nguyen Duc Cung describes in detail the internecine conflict and carefully examines the charges against Nguyen Than, presenting a more sympathetic view based upon evidence from a variety of sources, especially official court documents and the extensive family history (Gia Pha). Numerous pictures of and Chinese character quotations from ancient documents are presented. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This is an English translation of a Vietnamese language book by Nguyen-Duc-Cung entitled "History of the Highland Region According to 'The Account of the Barbarian Province'" (Lich-Su Vung Cao Qua Vu Man Tap Luc Thu). Cung translates an important ancient (1871) document written in Chinese c…haracters by a Vietnamese (Dai-Viet) General about the Dai-Viet's pacification, administration, and care of the mountain minorities of Central Vietnam, a document which had never been available completely, even in contemporary Vietnamese. He also provides critical review of existing literature on the issue and detailed explanatory notation on the ancient document itself. As such Cung's book is the "last word" on the history of relationships between the Vietnamese and the mountain minorities whom they encountered in Central Vietnam in their "advance to the South" (Nam Tien). The translation was done collaboratively by Donald Voth and Nguyen-Duc-Cung in 2024. This item is printed on demand.
