Until the 1960s, it was a region consisting of tiny fishing villages along the coast and small, family-owned farms and subsistance-level small-holdings inland. Portugal in general has long been overshadowed by its much larger eastern neighbour, Spain, which boasted a more developed economy and a much better road infra-structure, allowing access to areas away from the tourist resorts. During the last 25 years, the increase in tourism, modernisation of agriculture and the introduction of new industries have all had their effect on changing the landscape of the region, particularly along the southern coastal strip.
