"Before the mid-19th century, many authoritative works on British insects were published either entirely without illustrations or with highly expensive hand-coloured plates that were out of reach for average students. Spry and Shuckard sought to remedy this by creating a faithful, highly accurate, yet affordable visual companion. The book features 86 finely detailed lithographic plates (plus an 8-plate supplement in comprehensive copies), cataloguing nearly 288 pages of generic outline drawings. While reviewers at the time noted they were not quite as artistically lavish as John Curtis's legendary British Entomology, they praised Spry's outlines for being intensely accurate diagnostic tools for field classification."
