The original J.(Joseph Batchelor), the Kent paper maker, was Morris' choice for the books of his Kelmscott Press. Shewring was a classicist & translator (most notably… of the Odyssey). Tipped onto the front pastedown is Shewring's card printed with his name & Corpus Christi College, Oxford to which he has added, in ink, his Bristol address. There is no Gill device used for this, his first publication, which, with our hindsight, seems curious given their close association (though it must simply have predated it). He would go on to both edit Gill's letters & introduce his bibliography as well as be appointed his literary executor. Some foxing evident on the cloth of the spine; seemingly from the glue used in binding.

[Taylor & Sewell A151.] Shewring was a key figure in the art making religious communities formed by Eric Gill, Hilary Pepler, David Jones and others, most typified by the publications of their St.…Dominic's Press. As Fiona MacCarthy details in her biography of Eric Gill, Shewring was 'one of the essential people - his presence was accepted and his talents were made use - the resident intellectual.' She goes on that Shewring became a 'son-substitute' to Gill who 'came to rely on his mental vigour.' After Gill's death, Shewring was integral in the codification and dissemination of the Ditchling/Pigotts/Capel-y-fin ethos. In presentation letters housed in the Dominican Archives, Shewring writes that this volume is his 'earliest work' and cheekily admits that 'though not free from blemishes, considerably above Pepler's usual standard.' VERY GOOD. Shows some rubbing and handling of the vellum boards which are currently somewhat bowed, light natural toning of the endpaper, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain distinct. This is number '1' of a total edition size of only 240 copies. Light pushing at the spine ends and some tiny rubs to the rear panel and upper edge spine cloth. Ti…ny amount of spotting to the text-block. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Publisher's errata page present. Batchlor & Sons hand made paper printed on the Stanhope Press. Full page wood-engraving 'The Bride' and title page decoration by David Jones. In 'A Survey of the Engravings of David Jones' page 19, Cleverdon wrote ' To the end of his life, David was particularly fond of this engraving'. It was a remaking of a failed first illustration for 'The Ancient Mariner' in which he had wanted to evoke a nun taking the veil. He set off whites and greys against 'very small areas of solid black'. In one Romanesque window, apparently echoing the curves of the bride's breasts, appears the hart of Psalm 42. Dilworth also points out that her high forehead is Petra's but her groom is the Saviour with whom Jones identified. (Cleverdon E200: Taylor and Sewell A201 : Dilworth, David Jones pp1178). Protected in a loose Mylar archival cover. Very scarce.
