The book deals with a linguistic study done in situ of the phonological, morphosyntactic and lexical-semantic peculiarities of Venezuelan Spanish spoken in the areas of Barlovento, east of Caracas, and the Bobures area, southeast of Lake Ma…racaibo. The data was collected in interviews with informants descendants of former slaves. It includes a historical and ethnological summary of the slave trade to Venezuela and the Caribbean in general with a view to discovering the tribal origins of the sub-Saharan slaves that arrived in Venezuela. It also contains a section of vocabulary of supposed African origin collected in both areas with the meanings that the words have in Venezuela and their possible Sudanese and / or Bantu origins according to the specific languages ??that have been tentatively identified phonetically and semantically (there are more of Bantu origin ). It offers at the same time some examples as part of the customary lexicon of the Barloventeños, thus completing the analysis of the distinguished phenomena of Barlovento's speech.

The author aims at studying the connection between the use of A…fricanisms and socio-economic class. Megenney interrogates a broad swath of claims concerning potential syntactic, morphological, and phonemic influences in the field, giving sound analysis and drawing the conclusion that, with the potential exception of a causal correlation between the musical intonation in areas of high population density of people of African descent and the tonality of some of the studied languages, the only aspect that is incontrovertibly influenced is vocabulary, though direct source-traces prove problematic at best. Megenney's primary study of the interrelation of socio-economic class and the use of Africanisms, and the circumstances that allowed for the survival of such Africanisms in Brazil, is an intriguing read for any scholar of ethnolinguistics, as well as an excellent resource for researchers working in the Lusophone world.
