Si le corps et l'interprétation ont longtemps été placés dans un rapport d'exclusion, une partie de la pensée philosophique et critique a récemment proposé de repenser une continuité entre la réception sensible et l'élaboration du sens. La période qui s'étend de la Renaissance aux Lumières nous aide à le faire, parce qu'avant l'autonomisation de la sphère esthétique, une oeuvre ou une pratique esthétique ne sont jamais pensées hors de leurs effets sur leurs destinataires. Les études réunies dans ce volume invitent à repenser en profondeur l'expérience esthétique, qui se reformule plus exactement en relation esthétique : l'objet à interpréter n'est pas tant l'oeuvre que la réaction, l'affection, du corps face à l'oeuvre, ou la relation que le lecteur/spectateur établit avec l'oeuvre. C'est en fonction de cette interprétation seconde que l'on pourra décider du sens - ou de l'un des sens possibles - de l'oeuvre. On voit ainsi apparaître des manières différentes d'engager l'expérience sensible dans l'interprétation, ce qui nous importe à la fois comme pédagogues, dans nos pratiques de transmissions, comme chercheurs, pour comprendre comment opère l'élaboration du sens, mais aussi comme spectateurs, dans l'appréhension des oeuvres d'art qui nous entourent.
