Mainly European in origin, the arms were carefully chosen to illustrate the decorative evolution of Western firearms over more than three centuries, and to show how they rightfully take their place within the larger framework of the Western decorative arts. Many of the arms discussed are of royal or noble provenance. Two guns from the collection of Louis XIII of France are noteworthy both for the excellence of their execution and for their great historical importance. Also illustrated are pieces that belonged to the King of Denmark, the Medici, and the Dukes of Hesse-Darmstadt, along with others from the Royal Armories of Naples, Tula, the Kremlin, and Versailles.
