His observations during the action throw a startling light on the action as they differ widly from the official report.Wallace, as a civilian, conducted a survey of the unknown lands in the Liberian hinterland, between the St. Paula and Cavalla Rivers.The first 127 pp of the book tell of his arrival in Liberia and subsequent encounters with a Cannibal king, with doctors, a trek through the Devil's forest and a brush with the Lepoard Society. He also work on a survey in the Congo and the survey for the Pointe Noire-Loudima railroad. There is also a chapter on his exploits in Angola. A most interesting read. Size: 8 Vo.. Book.

A very nice tight and clean copy of this interesting account of this the experiences of Major Wallace from his initial embarkation at Liverpool in 1913 to Liberia in West Africa where he had been tasked with surveying some of the unknown lands of Liberia . His subsequent…surveys of the Congo are also noted! When the First World War broke out his knowledge of surveying map making and languages resulted in him becoming G.S.O.3 of the 32nd Division early in 1916. However on leave from the trenches he was able to get permission to join the Royal Navy Home Fleet and as a consequence became the only Army Office Observer at the Battle of Jutland A fascinating account! The book is not ex lib and is cleanly and tightly bound There is some slight foxing to the top and side of the page block. All photos illustrate the condition.
