Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good. Very good clean copy in modern leather binding with new end-pages. Printed on heavy paper. Horace Walpole (1717-1797), English writer and antiquarian, was the youngest son of England's longest-ruling Prime Minister, Robert Walpole is best known for writing the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto but he is the most famous of Richard III's defenders. His Historic Doubts on the Life and Reign of King Richard the Third, published in 1768, is a landmark in the Ricardian controversy. Because the entire work would require considerable downloading time, this hypertext edition has been divided into four parts, with Walpole's footnotes in a fifth file. Walpole did not divide his work into chapters; the divisions are therefore fairly arbitrary. Part I -- Preface; examination of Richard's earliest supposed "crimes" (murders of Edward of Lancaster, Henry VI, and George, Duke of Clarence). Part II -- The deaths of Edward V and Richard, Duke of York, an examination of the sources, and of the account of the murder. Part III -- The deaths of Edward V, further examination of evidence, and the case for the legitimacy of Perkin Warbeck's claims. Part IV--Richard III's physical appearance; summation. Footnotes for the entire text.…

Aggiungi al carrello8vo, pp. [ii], x, 327; pagination including 30-page booksellers' catalogue at end; a good copy in contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt (upper hinge cracked but firm, corners slightly worn). First edition of the French translation of An Answer to the latter part of Lord Bolingbroke's letters, probably by Horatio Walpole, first published in 1762. Hazen writes that it is 'often ascribed to Horace Walpole': it was left in MS by his uncle and published by his son Horatio (1723-1809). Lord Walpole (1678-1757), younger brother of Sir Robert, was a diplomat and politician in his own right. He had twice been British ambassador to the States General, so his works would have been of some interest at the Hague. Hazen p. 172, not noting the present French translation; Rochedieu p. 350. NUC records just one copy, at Yale. …
