With seventeen illustrations and a map (illustratore). First edition, first printing. The Cruise of the Kawa is the first book in a series of travel parodies by George S. Chappell, an American architect who also wrote under the pseudonym of Walter E. Traprock. A humorous tale of an exploration of the South Seas, Traprock's made-up adventures are elaborately crafted, complete with obviously faked photographs, fabricated news articles, and fictional animals. Period inscription front fly, hinges starting between signatures but holding, minor soiling boards and text block edges, overall very good or better. Publisher's beige cloth with gilt title, map endpapers.

First Edition. First edition. Softcover. [20 pages.] The second issue of this short lived journal. One of the highlights is double page black and white photograph by Nathan Lyons. Also includes contributions by Walter Chappell, Bruce Firestone, Elaine Feinberg, Joyce Wittenborn, and numerous others. A very near fine copy in stapled wrappers. Uncommon.
Condizione: Very Good. Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 224 pages. A splendid monograph on an unconventional photographer who developed a unique and deeply personal vision of the world surrounding him. Walter Chappell (1925?2000) is considered one of the foremost figures in twentieth-century American photography. His thinking and vision of the world were closely connected with the intimistic, spiritual explorations undertaken between the 1950s and the 1970s by artists like Minor White and Paul Caponigro. While Chappell photographed various subjects, his inner eye was stimulated in particular by the form of the human body and landscapes as well as the combination of both, through which he endeavored to perceive the creative flow, the energy that runs through and connects all things. Produced to accompany the first major European retrospective of Walter Chappell?s work, this catalog presents over 130 photographs, all originals, as well as the unfinished and previously unpublished album World of Flesh, which the photographer intended as the primary publication on his work. Clean copy. Record # 401159.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Rockwell Kent did dust jacket and endpapers - many posed black and white photo spoofs (illustratore). 1st Edition. HUM 039940 This grey cloth First Edition (1922 on title page and copyright page) hardcover has mostly clean boards with the gilt title on the front board bright. The spine has some sun darkening and that title is still readable but darker. There is a little fraying and tearing to top of spine and even less on bottom and edges and corners show little wear. The color endpapers with a "smiling walrus" are lovely and look like the heroic work of Rockwell Kent and are, but with tongue in cheek. The obviously fake photos are quite funny. The inside pages are clean and tight- there is a nice bookplate on the front inside board covering some of the endpaper. The dust jacket is a replica of the endpaper illustration but is in two large pieces- the front with large flap and the rear cover with large flap. Most, but not all, of the dust jacket spine is awol. We have put the pieces in a Brodart cover to preserve them.
